HONOLULU, T. H.. May J 6. Chi nese residents of Haw-all memorial lied the visiting members of congress who have been in the islands several days, to secure a Joint agreement be tween the United States and China to exclude Hawaii from the provisions of the Chinese exclusion act. It is planned to discuss the proposition at conference to be held later. The Chinese exclusion act went in to effect automatically when the is lands were annexed by the United States. Ameri can farms are on the average 6.5 miles from market, the farthest away av erage 8.7 miles, according to the de partment of agriculture, which has Just completed an inquiry. McNeil, manager of Leh man Springs, arrived last night from his winter home at Spokane and will leave for Lehman soon to prepare that resort for the summer run. Crockatt, of Pendleton, representing the University of Oregon, won a unanimous decision over Ray Glenwood of the University of Wash ington, In the third annual oratorical contest Friday night. Mr. Crockatt spoke on the subject, "An Outgrown State Philosophy." The Judges were A. H. Harris, C. C. McColloch and W. F. Magill of Portland. The decision carried with it a prize of $100. PASTIME TODAY! Will Repair and Oil Macadam. The county court today starts the work of patching and oiling the ma cadam road between Pendleton and Adams, Judge Marsh going out this afternoon to put the oilers at work at Havana station. In a number of places there are holes in the road and the court believes it a good business policy to make repairs before they become expensive. The entire road will be oiled. A Phlmister Proctor, the sculptor, is spending this week on upper Mc Kay creek where some of the Indians are holding a round-up of their hors es. In these round-ups Mr. Proctor finds much of value to him In his pro fession. His study of Indian life has kept him much In the company of the tribes on the reservation dur ing the past few months.
