One of Big Events In Northwest
Takes Pendleton Round-up aa Ex

People Standing Together.
Pendleton, because of her success
In singing the Round-up and mpklug
it an event of national renown, u
used as an example of the efficacy o(
cooperation by Harley Richardson,
treasurer of the La Grande Motor
cycle Club, In his appeal to La Grande
citizens to make the motor race on
July 17 a big event In the northwest
Here Is a part of his public exhortation:
"Has It ever occurred to you just
what has made the Pendleton Round
up such a big Buccess? Well, I'll tell
you what the geater part of its auc
cess Is directly due to. It is because
of the fact that the people of Pendle
ton, as a whole, stand together, shoul
der to shoulder and boost the Round
up. Now, the people of La Grande
are getting In line for a big day the
one big day of the year. We are go
Ing to have something out of the or
dinary here; It does not Infringe on
the right of other towns, or are we
copying the Round-up, the Union
stock show, etc , We have something
entirely new and original to offer in
eastern Oregon and It is a La
Grande day; a La Grande funct'on.
The Motorcycle Club Is handling the
affair but the La Grande Commercial
club Is with us In all that we do. We
are striving to put La Grande on the
mnp through the Motorace, as Pen
dleton has gained Its notoriety through
the Round up. So let us not forget
that we are all boosters, and when
you are writing a letter to a friend
do not forget to mention the Motorace
on June 17th La Grande's Big Day."

PITAL HERE,
Dr. D. ST. Reber lMsrusmi Cause of
Eye Defections Explain llraln
Aetlvlty and Various Mental pro

Active, Declares physician.
Delivering hU fourth lecture before
the nurses of St. Anthonys' hocpltal
and the students of St. Joseph's joail
emy on the psyslology of the spetiul
senses. Dr. D. N. Reber last evening
discussed not only the cauBe of eye
defections but went into detail In ex
plaining brain activity and the varl
ous mental processes. He said In
part:
"In studying refraction or eye test
ing we review the eye and also go in
side of the brain and see what Is tak
ing place.
"At birth we are all far sighted.
As the child develops, the tension of
the muscles moving the eye elongate
the globe until the distance from be
fore back la In proportion to the pow
er of the lens and we have normal
vision. If the eye remains too short
the lens muscle increases the power
of the lena until exhausted to the ex
tent that there is pain, headarhes,
and lid troubles. In some cases
cross eyes with partial loss of vision
In one eye, owing to atrophy of the
cells In the visual area in the brain,
both conditions, the straightening ot
the cross eye and redeveloping the
lost vision may be accomplished by
maklng the vision normal with a
glass.
"If the eye become too lone the
focus for distance cannot reach the
point of greatest vision on the retina
and we are near sighted.
"In both far and near sight the
tention on the muscles may be out of
balance and the cornea becomes long
er In one diameter than the opposite,
causing the light rays not to break
even aa they pass through the lens.
This is astigmatism. In the great ma
jority of cases the Latter disappears
when the former is corrected.
"A reduced image is made on the
retina, this sensation Is carried by
the optic nerve fibers to the vibual
area of the brain. As the brain cells
develop the child gradually comes to
know the meaning of Images wnkh
are Ideas. A train of mental Images
with their meaning is the dawn ct
knowledge, heretofore the world has
been a great big buzzing confusion.
Mind Processes.
"To understand brain activity we
must have In mind a few processes
and states.
"Mind is the sum of our thoughts,
past and present. Consciousness is
mind at the present moment, a never
ceasing stream of processes that go
on as long as the, body goes no Living.
The states of mind are Attention, the
directing of the Will. Will is the en
tire mind active. Inhibition Is tho
blocking of one thought by another
through deficient attention.
"The more Important processes are
Association, Memory and Imagina
tion. They are exemplified in a sin
gle cell but realized by the simultan
eous action of constellations of cells.
"A cell consists of the cell body
and its fibers, one fiber carrying slim.
ull or nerve current away from the
cell and another carrying sensation to
the cell, the special sense cells hav
ing only sensory and collateral fiber
From the cell are fibers called Axons,
from the sensory fiber are fibers call
ed Dentrites, a loose connection of the
two Is called the Synapse. The mole
cular vibration within the synapse Is
brain activity, governed by the Law
of Habit. A tendency of nerve tis
sue to do or be what it has done or
been on pome previous occasion.
"The collateral fibers are the asso
ciation fibers of Fleschlng. Their de
velopment Is the principal part ot
memory not only within a constella
tlon but In associating numerous con
stellations. "Memory la divided Into two ents
with an Interval between. In the
first event Is the directing of atten
tion, and forming an association with
the Intention of recall later, in the
earlier stages of development the
foundation Is laid by repetition as In
learning the multiplication table. In
teaching the alphabet by the associa
tion of Image with idea, the word
method, has superceded the repeti
tion method. Educational systems
progress as psychological methods de
velop in the minds of Instructors.
"The second event la the reproduc
tion of past experiences by the slm
ultaneous association of two or more
Ideas or thoughts present in con
seleusness, bringing Into view a for
mer thought. The action within the
synapses has occurred again.
"Imagination U the ability to recall
facts and thoughts so rapidly and ac
curately that new thoughts will occur.
The difference between Individuals is
their power of imagination. The in
ventors. writers and artists are the
geniuses ot the world, their brains
have reached out Into the unknown
vasts and wrought all human miracles.
