One Alex James, well known Indian arrived home Saturday from Port land where he had served three monthe In Jail. To celebrate his re lease he at once got drunk. He was picked up at 10 o'clock by Chief Kearney and taken to Jail. His good wife, Josephine, called to see him at 11 but he was lying In a drunken stupor and could not be aroused. She was told to return at 6 In the evening. With her little boy she was at the station promptly at that hour. James was brought up but he was still under the Influence of liquor and the three police in the office decided he was still too drunk to be released. They were Just start ing back to Jail with him when they were arrested by a heartbreaking cry from the little boy. He had not seen his father for three months and that officers should again put him behind the bars was too much for him. And his cry was too much for the offi cers. Apologising to each other, they all suggested that he be permitted to go home and, when the squaw brought a buggy, they helped him In. The Joy of the little boy was compen sation enough. PARIS, May 24 The Germans in Flanders again have resorted to fie lee of gas bombs, but In an attack upon the British positions they were thrown back. The war office announced the it- tack was between Tpres and Streen- straate. Behind a great cloud of chlorine the Germans charged, evi dently expecting to find the British overcome. "By the use of respirators the English were able to remain in their positions. The Germans were met terrific fire and virtually wiped out. BERLIN", May H. The allies were defeated with heavy losses in two) distinct drives against the Germans' !tt the last 24 hours, It was officially an nounced. Reckless attacks were made between Neuve Chapelle and Glvenchy and on the northern slopes of the Lorette Hills, the statement asserts where the allies were repulsed with great losses. PARIS, May 24. A German aero plane flew over a north suburb f Paris early today and dropped sever al bombs. Slight property damage was done. No one was reported In jured. Holland Protests. LONDON, May 26. Holland sent a note of protest to Germany regarding the loss of Dutch lives on the Lui tanla, according to The Hague dis patches. The text of the protest has not been made public but It was said to be similar to the American note (icrmnns on Offensive. BERLIN, May 25 Renewing the I offensive north of Przemysl, General Von Mckenzen's army have stormed and taken s'x strongly fortified vil lages and captured 20.000 Russians, an official statement announced. The Loyal Berean Class of the Christian Church of which Mrs. Si Reetz is teacher, last evening enter tained the Young Men's Bible Class, taught by Rev. T. F. Weaver. The church parlors were beautifully dec orated with red and yellow roses ai.d the class colors, red and gold. Musical selections were rendered by Miss Nellie Anlbal, Jaunita Frledley, Mildred Lynde and Ethel Freeman and Miss Florence Morton gave a reading.
