That the country can lie anil thrive under the existing tar iff is clear. Aside from its purely po litical aspect, a reopening of the who. ! tariff question can look only toward an increase of prices and be Justified only by a promised Increase In wages. Kxperience has shown that every general reconstruction of the tariff, whether for better or for worse, means at least two years of doubt, hesitation, bad business. The eternal seesaw of tariff ups and downs costs the country more than it would to live quitetly, even under a bad tariff system. Some day, perhaps, the Idea of taking the tariff out of politics and confiding its regulation to a commis sion of experts w 111 be realized. In the meantime, w h le there may be some mistakes to rectify and some items to be rewritten in the light of stupendous trade changes that have occurred, agitation for any wholesale tariff overturning must be bad for everybody, and for labor worst of all. . But what of this tremendous and terrible nation-wide desire to retire the Wilson adminis tration and place men of the dear old Hanna stripe in office once more? If the tariff powder is to be i COMMOitOKK COKVJl.I. tiiHittuuiJdtit.tia HiimtlMiiHiiiiiliiiUiHiiliUiii MfiiMiini?riMMtiitiMM!lMlMIMtM;M!ll'tf j 11..M1i-(M,iiu,i1...iin;;iin'H.iliil'.',iniiil itmmMitHtmm uifntwimi'ii'M' i..:UHMI..:ii..iilii.i.M1Oi.i4 :thus condemned by one of the greatest captains with what stuff shall the big guns be loaded? Without the tariff as the chief issue there can be no full dinner pail cartoons and without the full dinner pail cartoons there is nothing to a g. o. p. campaign. Is Wilson to go unbeaten and is the country to be denied a president such as Mark Hanna would choose all because there is no fit ammunition for the 40 centimeter guns? TOMORROW Tf T is fitting that all along the Columbia celebra tions are underway today and that great preparations are made for the dedication of the Celilo canal tomorrow. Transportation issues go to the very bottom of social wel fare. Production is in vain if there is no way to reach mar kets. The cheaper transporta tion charges 'become the better for the producer and the con sumer. The Columbia river will now be the greatest transpor tation system of the north west. It will regulate com merce costs along its borders and from its edicts there will be no appeal. A great day is at hand for the inland empire. IF MUCH IS GOOD, MORE IS BETTER t7? HE Portland Oregonian y asserts the midnight resolution regarding the Southern Pacific land grant was a good thing because rail road ownership of the land will be better for the state than would be ownership by the government. Then the resolution should have been more sweeping. It should have asked that all gov ernment lands in Oregon be turned over to the railroad companies. If a little is good, more should be better. It makes no difference, says the Oregonian, whether the gov ernment or the railroad gets the proceeds from the land. Then it is a waste of time for the government to administer the forest service and manage its desert lands. All such lands should be turned over to the railroads. What a sweet world this would be if the tories could have their way all the time and there were no "dema gogues" and "anarchists" to complain when the people were plundered. The open river is now at hand but Umatilla county's portion of the job is only start ed. Of what use will be river navigation if we do not have improved roads leading to the steamer landings? The conviction of the labor leader Lawson in Colorado means nothing as to the justice of the case. Colorado justice is under a cloud. are still The submarines plucking them off.
