Rear Admiral Moore, in a mall report re ceived at the navy department said the submarine F-4, when she started on her cruise outside Honolulu har bor was in good condition and that an accident a short time before referred to in widely circulated reports was only of "minor character." Published reports that the subma rine was known to have been in bad condition led to an Investigation by the department. "The accident which was referred to," wrote Admiral Moore, "was of a minor character. No report of it, however, is on file. The repairs men tioned consisted in replacing an ar mature that had been wet and was short circuited." He added that by official report the condition of the vessel was: Ma chinery, good; batteries, excellent; ship, verly good; personnel, excellent. Shipbuilders Get Work. SAN FRANCISCO, April 30. Busi ness improvement was reported by John A. McGregor, president of the Union Iron Works, who returned from the east. He announced work would be recommended by his firm on a proposed drydock to cost $5,000,000. Work on it was held up at the out break of the war. Government contracts for the con struction of three torpedo boat de stroyers and five submarines would be awarded to Pacific coast shipbuild ing firms about July 1, he said. The destroyers will cost about 11,000,000 each and the submarines about $550, 000 each. "Dying" Girl on Long Hike. LOS ANGELES, April 30.
