MYSTERIOUS RIVER OF
ALASKA IS CHARTED
i WASHINGTON, April 8. The re
!ccnt announcement by the depart
j n er,tof commerce of the discovery or
a practicable channel into the Kush
, kokwirn river, Alaska. attracted
.widespread interest. The interest
, HI be renewed by a notice just ls
, sued by the department to the effect
i that the coast and goedetlc survey
j has printed two companion charts,
,ne of Kushkokwim bay and one of
Ule rer. Both charts are supple
mented by leaflets of sailing direc
, t:ons containing a full description of
the courses which snouid be follow
ed, the landmarks and other details
of importance to the navigator.
Tie charts furnish the long sought
answer to the question of how to
leach in safety the mouth of the riv
er from the sea. For the first time
the navigator has the means to avoid
the deceptive blind channels which
penetrate the shoals of the delta and
a guide to follow the river channel
as It winds lis way through the mud
banks of the river bed.
These charts give the results of
four years of persistent effort in
adverse weather, many hardships and
some danger. With their aid this
great river valley becomes accessible
The resources of a territory cover
ing many thousands of square miles
await development by those who will
grasp the opportunity. The chart
makers have blazed the way.

July 6. 1910, the day after Johnson
knocked out James J. Jeffries former
title holder, at Reno. Nev., the two
words have hud a continuous life on

No one knows who the first "white

words together.- Tnlike "watchful

in of the phrase la disputed.
But the "white hopes" were legion
They sprounted like weeds right after
the bluck "beat Jeffries. Like weeds,
too, most of them had short lives.
Carl Morris. Jim Wlynn, Gunboat
Smith, Arthur Pelkey, Hull Young,
Frank Moran. Luther McCarthy and
even Jesa Wlllard. loomed up almost
simultaneously as possible champions
of the white race. The last "whit
hope'i was Tom Cowler, picked up In
Portland by Jim Corbett, and touted
as a world-beater.
Johnson and other circumstances
eliminated most of these "white
hopes." Arthur Pelkey killed his fel

HOW RAILWAY TRAINS
ARE MADE SANITARY
WASHINGTON, April 8. In a re
port dealing with the migration of
tuberculous persons in interstate
traffic recently Issued by the United
Slates public health service, the man
ner of cleaning and disinfecting Pull
man cars, day coaches, mail and bag
gage cars, at Acheville, N. C, Is de
scribed. a
When we consider the number of
persons who travel to and from
health resorts the. necessity of thor
ough cleansing of railroad cars be
comes evident. Not only Is formalde
hyde gas used as a disinfectant, but
soap and hot water are liberally" used
as a means of mechanical cleansing.
Dust is removed from the carpets,
upholstered seats and Interior of the
cars by means of compressed air
which has been found to be the most
efficient means for this purpose.
Fresh air and sunlight which are
anion? the best disinfecting agents
we have, are also utilized as a fur
ther means of cleaning the blanket,
mattresses and curtains used In
Pullman cars.
In addition to the cleaning and dis
infection of railroad coachea the use
of individual drinking cups, drinking
water of a required standard of pur
ity, Individual towels and dental lav
oratories are all factors which make
traveling by railroad not only more
agreeable bat safer. j
The slogan "Safety First". applies

ITALIAN FLEET MOVES
NEARER THE ADRIATIC
ON THE ITALIAN FRONTIER,
via Paris, April 8. The warships of
the Italian fleet departed suddenly
on Monday from the Mediterranean
raval stations at Spezla, Gaeta and
Maddalena Islands. They concentrat
ed at Augusta, Sicily, and at Taran
to. They are thus within a few hours
of the Adriatic.
The departure of these warships
caused a profound Impression, partic
ularly at Spezla, where until last Sun
day, the harbor was crowded with
dreadnoughts, cruisers and torpedo-1
boat destroyers, while tho town was1
filled with officers and sailors. j
Italy now hus the finest fleet in
her history. It Is headed by several
new dreadnoughts of which the most
formidable is the Conte de Cavour,
which corresponds in the Italian navy
to England's Queen Elizabeth.
The future movements of the fleet
are veiled with absolute secrecy. It
is asserted that only the king and
one or two of the highest government
officials are acquainted with tha
