May opened at (1.&6 1-8 and July at 1.24 1-8. Immediately after the opening selling in wheat became general on forecast of show ers In the grain belt and prices sag ged. May dropped I cent and July 3-4e. The pit crowd was bearish and pressed the market. Corn opened with scattered selling In a small way. May sold at 72 3-4c and July was offered at 75 3-4c. The demand for oats was scattered. Prices were lower. Provisions were weak. The wheat market closed 1 3-8 (S 2c lower after bearish selling on the government report. WHEAT. A wounded officer arriving from the front tells how Rus sian teetotalism affected a fish pond in a captured German village and in cidentally supplied the Russian sol diers with several days provisions. Eight hundred casks of spirits found in the village were dumped into the nond. The fish became intoxicated and floated on the surface. Russian soldiers gathered the fish by tons and nloyed the delicacy for several days. LONDON. Another case of positi ons reversed through the war is men tioned by an officer of the London Scottish. London's crack volunteer corps, as follows: "One of our fellows who has recently been promoted lance-corporal, before he came out got his chauffeur a Job in the army service corps.
