CHICAGO WHEAT HAS SHARP Till (Saturday's Market.) CHICAGO. Mav what clo ed 1 l-2c higher for the day. July nhoui l-4c higher, September 1-Sc higher than Thursday. This statement does Uiot by any means represent the strong action in the market or the t.ullish feeling. There was Just enough peace talk In the early press cablea to lead the bear element in the trade Into trouble. They sold May off to 151 7-8 and broke the new crop months lc from Thursday's close. A leading cash and export house took practically all the offers in May around 152. Other strong houses absorbed the offerings of July around 122 and under. Late In the session foreign news counted for nothing. It was a case of evelng up by the local trade. Covering carried prices up to 154 1-4 and 123 1-4. Tone of English cables was firm, La Plata and winter wheat cargoes quoted firm at a little higher on offers. The large weekly clearances from this side had somewhat bearish Influence In the English trade. On the other hand the export clearances of wheat and flour for the day reached 1,772,000 bushels and became a bull help on the late up turn. Illinois counties are sending dry weather and crop damage complaints. Kansas City claims that most of the 750,009,000 bushels of wheat remain- j Ing there will be loaded out as fast as cars can be obtained and stocks will be next to nothing by May 1. I The corn market was in a heavy position during the morning with local trade inclined to press the selling side. As in wheat, the offerings were taken by strong commission people, pre- j sumably on orders from' active leaders. Market had but little rally Immedi ately following the early dip, but when export clearances for the day were posted at 1.287..000 bushels local re ceipts down to 37 cars and fair volume of shipping sales for Saturday, there was a quick change of feeling which carried the market up to 73 l-4c for May and split under 75 3-4c for July. From 6( 5-8c on the early dip May coats prices had a little better than l-2c upturn, helped by the action in wheat and corn. The market- closed without much snap at 57 and 54c. Lo cal receipts were 107 cars. Shipping sales 130,000 bushels. There was a light run of hogs at the yards with prices 10c higher. Fol lowing the bearish action in provisions of late, this naturally started consid erable covering, and gave products an early upturn of 20c or more for July pork, 10c for July lard and 7 l-2c for ribs. The advance Invited selling by a number of active brokers thought to be filling orders for packers and the market weakened. WHEAT. Hay Open. 152; high, 154; low, 151; close, 153 7-8B.
