While driving his car from this city home as he was. passing through the cut, a small landslide struck his car and caused him some delay before he could ex tricate himself. TEXAS WILL WIPE OUT 1 ILLITERACY IN STATE ACST1X, Tex., April 3 Texas has fired the first shot ut Illiteracy in the "solid south." by passing a com pulsory school attendance law. Tex as, the least illiterate state In the south, is still the thirty-seventh state in the Union In degree of literacy. Following her lead, It is expected oth. er commonwealths below the .Mason and Dlxou line will adopt compulsory education. 4 The Texas legislature, Just adjourn ed, enacted a luw to compel the at tendance at school o( every child ov er seven years of age at least six months every year until the age of 12 Is reached. But the bill does not go into effect until September, 115, and for the next three years the max imum of six months attendance Is not enforceable. No child of twelve years or over can be compelled to at tend school if he has completed the fourth grade and his assistance Is needed In the home. While this law may not compare favorably with stricter measures In northern states It Is considered a fair beginning for a stute so long steeped In chlid labor and Illiteracy. The advocates of the measure In the 1915 legislature were confident the law would be Improved In future sessions. It was bitterly fought in both branch es of this legislature. Charging that her husband, George Melton, acted toward his 13 year old daughter In an unnatural way, Mrs. Leota Melton today 'fed suit for di vorce from him on the grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. She is living In Pilot Rock with their two children but alleges that her husband several months ago left for Harrison county Missouri where they were mar. ried In 1897. The Pendleton bowling team this morning received a letter from Charles Wellington Furlong of Bos ton, the author and Round-up booster, congratulating them upon the unique way In which they adver tised Pendleton and the Round-up at the recent tournament in Spokane. He had read the account In the East Oregonlan, he stated, and had recog nized the faces In the picture accompanying. To Hold Exams. The U. S. civil service commission announces that a stenographer and typewriter examination, for the field service, will be held in this city on May 15. Notice was received this morning by Befcree Fltz Gerald that Otto Bergrcln of Freewater had been de clared a bankrupt and a consultation of the list of liabilities shows pretty plainly that the ownership of an au tomobile has been fatal to his fi nances.
