HOSTILE FLEET COULD REDUCE HEW YORK TO J DEFENSES OF CITY WOIXD OF FER LITTLE PROTECTION HE DECLARES. Chairman of Senate Naval Affairs Committee, In Interview, Declares Warolili Could Steam Within Range and Rodin Skyscrapers In a Very Sliort Time. BY BURTON K. STANDI!!. (Written for the United Preas) WASHINGTON. March 24 "A fleet of English or German battle ships making an attack on New York could deKtroy several billion dollars worth of skyscrapers in a half hour's bombardment, and steam away again with but little damuge, as far as the defense are concerned.'' That was the statement of Senator Benjamin B. Tillman, of South Carolina, chairman of the senate naval affairs commit tee. In an interview granted the Unit ed Press. "Every now and then we have a war game, in which a fleet attacks the forts defending some particular town both fire enormous quantities of blank cartridges and shells, and then the umpires speak their little piece, alwavs somewhat to this effect: me attack- made by the fleet reflects great credit on the officers command ing it. and shows the vessels to be mont efficient of their class. However it waj clearly shown that the fleet could not have gotten past the forts and destroyed the town. Would Pound Skyscrapers. "It me be sure about that now," he said, taking off the receiver of his telephone. A few minutes later he was deep In a maze of figures with experts from the navy department about depths of water at various plac es alnnz the sound route. "Yes," he continued, "the battle ship Massachusetts Just passed through Hell Gate the other day on her way from the Brooklyn navy yard to Newport. Now I don't mean to say. or have It understood, that I am In favor of building a whole flock o( battleships because I pay this tribute to their power. We ought not to have authorized two dreadnaughts this year. It was ridiculousness carried to the nth power. We want battleships when we know how to build the most effective ship, but personally I would not be surprised If at the end of this war not only' every battleship alfoat. but every battleship building will be obsolete. Certainly those now built and building are very nearly obsolete now, when the submarine is con sidered. Dreadnaughts Xot Effective-. "It may be discovered that If we build dreadnaughts with three bottoms and three decks, to guard against both mines and torpedoes underneath, the airship bombs from overhead, the) will be all right. Certainly those now built are extremely vulnerable. "Instead of two dreadnaughts. If we were to build two big ships, we should have built two battle cruisers. Not a single blow has been struck In this war so far by a dreadnaught. A num ber of them have been blown up, but that did their country no particular good. Battle cruisers have struck several good blows. Their tremend ous speed and big guns enable them to make such spectacular fights as that of the Lion and the Princess Koy ftl against the fleet of which the Blu cher was a part." Although much Is said regarding the "increased cost of living," it Is noted thnt lumber Is cheaper than it was ten years ago. AY TILLMAN 'Ml SPOR TS ETON CLUB III 0. IJ. Local Bowlers Help Boost Round-Up on Tournament Trip INIFOKMS OF GAUDY COLOK AND COWBOY HATS ADD EFFECT I V EN" ESS. Not only did they get in the mon ey at the Northwest International Bowling Congress in Spokane last week but the men who represented this city also did some very effective boosting for the Round-up. What time they were not telling the other bowlers of the thrills of the local cowboy carnival or making the alleys resound with "Let r Bucks," their clothes were exploiting Pendleton and Its Institution of entertainment. Each wore a gaudy shirt of red and green silk and the cowboy sombrero which has come to be symbolical of Pen dleton. They attracted attention not only In tho alleys but on the streets and no one was In any doubt of the name of the town from which they came. The newspapers of Spokane, too, took notice of their appearance and performances. Their picture was ta ken and appeared In the columns and every day some little notice was printed, a sample of which Is the fol lowing taken from the Spokesman Review of Saturday: "The Pendleton bowlers made a naty appearance In their bright green and red silk shirts. Their cowboy Stetson hats are as large as the aver age umbrella. They are boosting ac tively for the Round-up." Portland, Ore., Is the largest lum ber manufacturing city In the world.
