"I know I am dying, but 1 don't cure. It's ulwuys our luck. It runa In our furnlly llko wooden legx. My father was killed at Abu Kle.i: his father at Uundlwhana; his grand father at the Alma, and his great grandfather at Waterloo.'' The dying soldier waa an Irlnhman of the IJverpool regiment, wounded In the big fight at Ypres. Describing the scene, Lt. H. H. Watson of the Highland Light Infuntry aaya It waa the most philosophic death he ever wltnesoed. "His destination mark waa shown clearly on his pallid faca, and I tried In the most sympathetic way to reconcile him to the Inevit able" aald the lieutenant, "but he needed no bracing up." "To the last," continued the offi cer, "the young Irishman kept up a continued chatter. "Why, more mem bers of my family than I have but tons on my clothes," he said, have died on battlefields since war was first Invented. Now, It's simply my turn. "Do you know It's been said that If one of us died In bed he wouldn't have the Impudence to ask Saint Pet er to admit him to Heaven, but would Banter about between the two places until he met somebody who would kill him In a decent fight "That's the way we are built, and I would rather die here than In the most comfortable bed you could rig up at home. The man who dies at home doesn't know the pleasure of death. "There's much In the Joy of fighting that appeals to me, and I wouldn't mlaa a set-to like thla for all the world. "Oood-bye. old chap, you were my superior a day of two ago, but we're e'luala now." PETROGItAD. Jan. SI. (Ry Mail to New York) The Cossacks do not hold a very high opinion of the prow ess of the Turks, If a story told by a Russian army surgeon recently re turned from the front Is to be believ ed. "Early In the fighting," he aald. "I operated upon a Cossack who had lost an arm. When he was about recov ered, I asked him what were his Diana for the future. "I'm going to enlist In the Caucas ian army," was the reply. "But how can you, with only one arm?" I enquired. "We Cossacks don't need more than cne arm to beat the Turks," answer ed the soldier In all aerlousnesa. "Since then, I have made a practice of asking every Cossack who had to undergo a similar operation as to his Intentions, and almost Invariably 1 have received a similar reply.'' This Is the meas ure amending the primary law to al low candidates for office the option of raying a flat prescribed fee and thus getting his name on the primary ballot, or of circuiting petitions as the jaw now requires. The bill emerged from Its travail i with many changes and amendments. Chlet of these, removing the biggest objection to the original bill, la the elimination of tin requirement that the defeated party candidates pledge themselves to supirrt the successful p.irty candidate. Another requires 'hat a candidate, beaten by the vot ers of his rarty, niay not accept the nomination of anv other party, and thus run for office regardless of his tcrndown at the h-inda of those with Thorn he affiliates. Olson presented fUurea showing the cost of getting petitions circulated In the case of candidates for judge of he supreme court. Including notary fees, pay of petition circulators and cost of verifying names from the reg istry. Every candidate, therefore, ha the option of paying those fees, and getting his name on the ballot auto matically an advantage Olson claim ed in the case of the large cities or ot sending around petitions in small communities where '.lie number of re quired signatures makes the task easy.
