German Scientista Held.
BERLIN, Dec. 26. The astronom
ical observatories of Berlin, Ham
burg, Munlsh and Potsdam have Just
Issued a statement regarding the
fiasco of the four German expediti
to observe the total eclipse of the sun
on August 21.
Although the expedltlona were
undertaken with tho assistance of the
St. Petersburg Academy of Sclencee,
the astronomers and their technical
helpers were arrested and kept as
prlsonera for a time In Odessa. The
older scientists finally were allowed to
return to Germany, but the four
younger men were kept In Odessa
until November 14, when they were
sent as prlsonera of war to Astra
chan. Tholr valuable astronomical instru
ments had a still worse fate. They
had to be left, packed In boxes at
Fedoslu, in tho Crimea, and they
were later confiscated by the Russlun
government and given to the Univer
sity of Odessa.

The ordinance contemplates no Im
mediate ouster of one race from
blocka where the other predomlnatea,

ECHO, Ore., Dec. 26 The Christ
maa dance given here-Thursday night
by Messrs. Rice and Young was a
success In every way, a large crowd
waa present, many coming from
Pendleton, as well aa the eurround-
insr country. Excellent music waa
furnished by the Echo Orchostra. An
unusual good time waa had by all
lovera of the light fantastic that were
present.
The Christmaa tree and program
given here on Christmas eve waa en
Joyed by a great number of grown
people aa well aa little folk. Every
child present received a treat In
memory of the season.
An entertaining and Interesting
program waa rendered. The tree waa
In the I. O. O. F. hall and the enter
tainment waa under the auspices of
the M. E. Sunday achool.
Miss Annie Baling, who la teaching
in the east end of the county, la home
for the holldaya She arrived on the
motor Thursday evening.
Miss Esther Sholl. a high achool
pupil, substituted Thuraday In room
two at the public school in the ab
sence of the teacher, Mlaa Roae
Oreenwald. She had charge of the
fifth and sixth grades.
Mlaa Daphne Gulllford, who haa
apent the past four months In Port
land with Dr. and Mrs. C J. Smith,
has returned home and will take up
her achool studies after the holiday

Mrs. Austin Aaron of this place, la
at Rainier, Ore., where she waa call
ed by the death of her father. She
will not return home until after the
first of the year.
