Vitrified Brick Crossing.
The O.-W. R. & N. Co. Is now put
ting in a vitrified brick crossing at the
Intersections of its tracks on East
Court street, thus eliminating a very
objectionable spot In that hard sur
face thoroughfare. Mike Moran Is
superintending the work and Is setting
the brick in cement so that the sur
face will be smooth.

Police John Kearney today Issued , or
ders to all of his police, regular and
special, to arrest every man, woman
or child who violates the speed ordi
nance of Pendleton. Any vehicle
driven faster than 15 miles an hour
or any horse exceeding that limit will
be stopped at once and the owner ta
ken into court. With such a great
crowd present the officials are deter
mined that no needless danger shall
confront them.

suit against Norman D. Loughlln to
collect $250 and interest, alleged to

I' nlted States National bank with de
posits of over a million, and the
Vnlon Loan and Trust company with
deposits over a quarter of a million,
failed to open their doors following
an inspection of the Institutions'
books by Federal Examiner Mullt.
The directors of the Institutions as
sert they will turn over all their pri
vate property and that the depositors
will be paid in full.
George Dysart, a stockholder In the
United States National, attributes the
failures to the European war and
dullness of the lumber market and
also to the fact that other bunks had
called in paper held on the local In
stitutions.
It was said the trouble directly was
due to financing mill and , logging
properties in which the bank people
were Interested. The state bank at
Tenlno. owned by the same Interests
as the two Institution here, also fail
ed to open their doors. This failure,
bank officials Ktuted was largely due
.Invested
on a statutory charge. He was pick
ed up by Sheriff Taylor on the Walt
er Cresswell ranch.

Edgar F. Averill, district game war
den, has received, word that his father

and Russell, Supt. SwarUlander of
the Agency and his interpreters must
report tomorrow, according to a tele
gram received today. With good for
tune, however, they will be able to
get back Wednesday night

Police Prepare for Offenders.
Round-up week is the busiest week
of the year for the police as well as
for everybody else in the city and
Chief Kearney has made preparations
accordingly. Seventy-five speclav po
lice have been secured and each one
lias been assigned to a separate beat
so that every part of the town will be
patrolled day and night. In the bus
iness district traffic police will be on
every corner to lessen the danger of
collision or other accidents. Sher
iff Tiylcr also has an extra force and
some of the best detectives In the
northwest will be here on the look
out for crooks.
Walla Walla Show Sued.
Reports reach here that already at
leapt one suit has been filed against
the management of the ,Walla Walla
frontier show In an effort to collect
money from It. Del Blancett, well
known cowboy who won some of the
prizes there last week, is said to be

Hereafter, If residents of Pendleton
desire mail delivered at their homes
they must provide receptacles for the
mail at the front doors. This Is an
order sent out by Assistant Postmaster
General Daniel C. Roper and receiv
ed by Postmaster T. J. Tweedy this
morning. Sixty days will be given for
compliance with this order, after
which service to houses with recep
tacles at side or back doors will be

Victims of Accident Recover.
Mrs. (Jus Byers and Mrs. C. O.
Ithinehurt, who were injured In an
automobile neur Walla Walla Satur
day, nre recovering satisfactorily and

distance telephone this morning
When the Byers auto turned turtle,
both women were thrown over a
fence. Mrs. Byers was only dazed
by the fall but Mrs. Rhlnehart suf
fered a fractured wrist and several
cuts and scratches on the face, caus
ed by a bar be J wire which she struck.
The three other occupants, Mr. Byers,
his little son, Waldon.'and Doc Rich
ardson, a boy about IT, miraculously
eKcaped. According to W, L. Thomp
son, whose car Byers was passing at
the time of the accident, it Is won
deful that the occupants escaped so
fortunately. Mr. Thompson had stop
ped his own car at the side of the rond
