but well supported and May advanced
an additional 1-Sd. Light Argentina
shipments, firmness of La Platta and
Australian offers, strength In spots
here and few speculative offers, help
ed the advance. 'Expectations that
world's shipments this week will be
ample and continued highly favorable
reports from the American . winter
outlook checked the udvance.

PORTLAND. Ore., March 21.
There was quite a liberal marketing of
mutton and swine in the North Port
land yards overnight and a fair supply
of cattle came forward.
The market for hogs-shows further
gain In strength with an advance of a
nickel over recent extreme figures and
by the way makes the Portland mar
ket the highest In the country, not
withstanding a very good tone and ad
vance generally In the east today.
Denver hog market was steady.

Sheep Trade Continues Favorable.
Conditions in the sheep trade con
tinue very favorable In the local mar
ket. Advance sales of lambs which
were reported yesterday on the basis
of $7 for top wool offerings, came
forward today.
Good quality mutton and lambs is
rather scarce In the local territory and
a shipment of 6 loads was reported on
from a Montana point this morning.

MOLASSES "STICKS" SHIP.

Thickened Cargo.
IIOSTOX, March 20. The proverbi
al slowness of cold molasses has been
demonstrated again. As a result, the
tramp steamer Ixia has lost a char
ter, she Is a tanker equipped to dis
charge a full cargo In two days, and
arrived here two weeks ago with 500,-
000 gallons of molasses.
The cold wave thickened the mo
lasses. Pipes were clogged, pumps
made of little use and the I x la's crew
has worked two weeks Instead of two
days in discharging the freight. Thi
steamer Is not yet ready to leave.
Swiss lrolilllt Hotting.
OKNEVA, Switzerland, March 20.
Public sentiment against gambling on
horse racing has extended to Switzer
land and the police authorities prohib
ited the drawing of the various sweep
stakes on the chief horse racing events
in England.
The drawing was advertised fox
March 21 and $75,000 of English bet
tors' money had been received here
during the past few weeks. The ac
tion of the police is a blow to English
betting on the continent.

PITTSBURGH. March 21- Patron's
day In the schools of Allegaheny and
other Western Pennsylvania counties
today drew thousands of persons to
