It waa a delightful evening that
about fifty citizens of Pendleton and
other parta of Umatilla county spent
in the Commercial club rooms last
evening on the ocoasion of the first
social session of the Umatilla County
Historical Society. The program of
papers. dealing with the early history
of the county and pioneer anecdotes
was .most enjoyable and all too soon
for the pleasure of the company came
to an end.
The reminiscences of Mrs. Nancy
DcSpaln as read by her granddaughter
Miss .Mildred Berkeley and of Mrs.
Mary Disosway held the audience in
rapt attention, giving as they did bits
of real life in a romantic past. Mrs.
Robert N. Stanfield opened the pro
gram with a talk on the naming of
Pendleton which proved very enter
taining. . "The Early History of Pilot
Rock." a paper by Rev. E. W. War
rington was read by Miss Grace Gil
liam and furnished some illuminat
ing facta upon the pioneer days of
the south end town. Another very
Interesting paper was on "Early In
dian Trails"' by Homer I. Watts of
Athena. The general after-talk, led
by Major Lee Moorhouse, was en
Joyed by everyone. In keeping with
the occasion, Mrs.. Gilbert W. Phelps
delighted the members and guests by
playing old, familiar airs on the pi
ano. Refreshments were served after the
program was concluded. Mrs. Mattie
La Dow presiding at the tea table.
Quests were present from all over the
county and, altogether, the first social
session of the society was distinct
success.
Miss Clara Tardiff, who has been
visiting her mother, Mrs. Edgar
Thompson for the past three weeks,
has returned to hef home in Port
land. Miss Marie Struve-who has been
visiting for the past six months with
her sister, Mrs. H. H. Taylor, in San
Diego, California, arrived home Wed
nesday evening.
The Current Literature Club is this
afternoon meeting at the home of Mrs,
Elza T. Wade on Bush street.
Rev. and Mrs. George W. Kennedy,
who were residents' of Pendleton in
pioneer days, returned this morning
to their home in Hood River, after
enjoying a visit of several days with
oldtlme friends.
