HOG MARKET MAKES A
VERY POOR SHOWING
(Courtesy of The Journal.)
PORTLAND. Ore., Jan. 21There
were no fresh arrivals for the market
at North Portland today.' Total ar
rivals were but 6he load and this was
shipped in by Hugh Cummings, the
regular buyer of the Union Meut com
pany at Corvallis.
The position of the hog market
here, sad to relate, is still one of the
poorest In the entire country. The
rut into which the local market has
fallen is so deep that all efforts to
force higher figures consistent with
what is happening elsewhere, have
failed.
The highest market in the east to
day stands at $8.60 or 55c above the
extreme figure here. As a general
rule the North Portland market Is
that much above anything In the east
therefore compared with the normal
standing of the trade here, prevailing
prices are over $1 too low.
At the moment there seems to be
no hope for any material Improve
ment In the price of swine here, un
less killers out of the goodness of
their hearts decide to give country
Interests more for their product. So
far as the general market is con
cerned there Is absolutely no need of
buyers digging down into their pock
ets to give higher prices for swine.
They are already getting all the hogs
they need, In fact practically every
cne has a surplus at this time. High
er prices are generally given only to
stimulate an Increased supply but a
further Increase In offerings at this
time would likely wreck the already
low price shown here.
General hog market range:
Top killers $ 8.05

Cattle Extremely Weak.
The situation in the cattle market
continues of very weak character.
While there were no additional offer
ing in the loevl yards reported in
overnight, so much stuff has been
held over that there is not the slight
est likelihood of a shortage, of offer
ings here, even though nothing comes
It rward for several weeks.
The extreme weakness in which the
cattle market here has fallen Is In
dicated by the sale lute yesterday af
ternoon of several lots of first class
stuff that had been fed on grain for
a period of 120 days, at $7.60. There
fore it is easy to see what ordinary
hay fed stuff will sell at in compe
tition with this superb quality.

Klieep Market Continues Good.
While there were no additional sup
plies of mutton to offer on the North
Portland market for the day. the sit
uation is very strong. Recent sales In
the local yards have indicated an in
creased demand for mutton products
here and killers are taking hold of
greater supplies than ever before.

Standard RewepUcles for Poisons.
NEW YORK. Jan. 21. Resolutions
seeking from the legislatures of atl
states laws requiring drug manufac
tures and wholesale and retail drug
stores to adopt a special form of re-
ceptlcle for bi-chlorlde of mercury,
today were presented at the sessions
of the New York State Pharmaceut
icat Association, which is holding Its
annual convention In Madison Square
Garden.
In connection with the resolutions
presented, the attention of delegates
and visitors was called to the exhibit
of patent bottles, boxes and capsules
designed to hold bl-chlortde of mer
cury and other poisonous drugs and
medicines. Standard shapes of re
cepttcles, boxes and capsules for the
various poisons and drugs, it was ar
gued, would do away almost entire
ly with accidental deaths by these
poisons. There was every Indication
today that the resolutions would be
adopted and the officials of the asso
ciation ordered to send them to the
legislatures of all the states In the
union.
