It is true1 as Tom Richardson says,

Not a live town in the northwest
puts up with such conditions as we
do. Walla Walla has club rooms that
re magnificent compared with what
we have. Waltsburg a town about
one-third the size of Pendleton has
us beat a mile In this respect. So
has Dayton. Washington. La Grande
has gotten the entire top floor of a
fine new hotel for Commercial club
quarters. All the Willamette Taller
towns now keep good Commercial
club rooms. Corvallis has large and
tastefully arranged rooms. Oregon
City is modernly equipped in this re
spect and one day each week the la
dies may use the rooms. Med ford.
McM innvUle, Albany and other places
are up-to-date. Eugene recently se
cured new Commercial club quarters
and the rooms they abandoned were
infinitely better than the Pendleton
club rooms
It is up to Pendleton to catch up
with the procession or cease claiming
to be a live, ambitions town. The cost
of good, quarters is no bar to the im
provement. It will be easier for the
club to pay expenses in good rooms
than in the present rooms. It will be
easier -to pay high rent than to pay
cheap rent, parodoxical as it sounds.
Now that the sabject is up here and
President Tallman is striving to bring
the Commercial club up to the true
Pendleton standard, help the move
along. :

There has been called to the atten
tion of the East Oregonian a news
story that appeared
Justification in the Portland
For Copperfield. Journal in Novem
ber. It follows:
-Baker. Ore.. Nov. 12. Contrary to
expectations, the grand jury reporting
last evening after a four-day session,
failed to indict any of those against
whom the efforts of Governor West's
agents were directed in the local vice
crusade. The jury reported it was
not up to the county to handle, the
cases, which were turned back, to the
city officials."
The story throws new light on the
necessity for Governor West's action
at Copperfield. Acting probably on
the suggestion of their district attor
ney the Baker grand Jury had refused
tc indict men for violations of the
state law. If they applied that prin
ciple to Copperfield as it seems they
did then they left the matter in the
hands of two saloonkeepers, two bar
tenders and one saloon swamper.
Those officials enforced the law by
selling liquor to 14 year old boys, by
allowing gambling, by tolerating in
cendiary fires and insults to decent
people.
Yet some people wonder why Gov
ernor West resorted to strenuous
methods to clean up Copperfield. He
did It because the civil authorities
through indifference or cowardice
had made our laws a farce.
The prospect of Irrigating the full
30 000 acres under the West Umatilla
project Is looking up. First thing we
know the entire country between here
and Heppner Junction will be a vast
Irrigation region. Pendleton should
keep close to that country.
Is Mr. Crawford's gubernatorial an
nouncement an off hand view, a first
thought opinion or a sure enough de
cision, not to be changed after sup
per? Hard work is always a good antidote
for idle men.
