Chlet Justice White and Associate
Justices Van Devanter and Lurton of

nent guests.
During the dinner there arrived
from Manila, in an aeroplane, which
first appeared on a screen as a speck
and approached until it became real
size, a messenger extraordinary, who
announced that the Filipino tribes,
"in cock-pit assembled," had just
ailoted a declaration of independ-
i ence. To prove that they should be
given independence, the declaration
recited that the United States had
been tyrannical by suppressing inter
tdibal strife, encouraging business and
commerce, raising the standard of
living in the Islands, economically col
lecting the revenues and bo on through
a long list of reforms. The messen
ger urged the Carabao to get the
United States to double the number
of battleships in Philippine waters.
The toastmaster was Major Gener
al Robert K. Evans, in command of
the department of the Gulf. Henry
D. Estabrook of New York spoke in
favor of retaining the Philippines, de
claring that the time had not come
to arrange for the independence for
the Filipinos.

$11,000 CHRISTMAS FOR BABY.
$1000 Troo and $10,000 Worth of
Toys for the $100,000,000 McLean
Child.
Washington. A J1000 Christmas
tree, the largest ever seen in Wash
ington, and $10,000 worth of import
ed toys, will make the birthday party
of Vinson Walsh McLean, the $100.
000.000 baby, notable in the annals
of American childhood. No expense
has been spared to. make the third
birthday of Master McLean memora-able.
For weeks, an agent of his indulg
ed father, Edward Beale McLean, son
of John R. McLean and nephew of
Admiral-Dewey, has been skirmishing
around Europe buying up the pick of
the children's toys. These toys were
then brought over on the steamer
Mauretania and so precious were
they that Mr. and Mrs. McLean them
selves went to New York to meet the
steamer.
Not content with giving these beau
tiful toys, McLean has remembered
his own childhood and provided a
real circus performance.
The Christmas tree will be decor
ated from top to bottom with import
ed trimmings and myrlods of coloded
electric lights. A new feature in the
lights has been designed and worked
out In characters of Mother Goose.
The figures have been molded Into
the glass of the light and make a
unique appearance.

Chicago Man Says New Forms Are
But Reaction from t'e "Pasrfve"'
Kinds.
Chicago. The "passive dances" of
today, such as the waltz and the two
step, should be relegated to oblivion
and in their stead should be substi
tuted the old time Captain Jinks,
Dan Tucker and Virginia Keel, danc
es of bodily action and physicial ex
pression, according o Edwin B. Le
Groot, general secretary of the Play
grounds association of Chicago, who
spoke before the Irish Fellowship
club.
The bunny hug, the grizzly bear and
the turkey trot, he said, are but a re
action from the "passive dances''
which havetransformed the former
physical exercise of the ball room
Into a gliding dream.
"Those old dances require more
bodily action and physical expression,
which the modern passive dances do
not afford," said Mr. De Groot. "This
country has ushered in an era of
commercialized passive amusements
that do not require the physical ac
tivity and initiative that the games of
earlier generations produced."
Killed Cougar With .22 Rifle.
Albany, Ore., Dec. 21. Snacken
burg brougtit a cougar scalp to the
office of the county clerk here and
obtained the bounty of J 10 for the
evidence of his prowess with a .22
rifle. Snackenburg was out In the
woods with the toy rifle and his dog,
when the cougar attacked the dog.
Snackenburg shot the big cat with
the small gun. The first shot did not
kill the animal and the ejector of the
rifle was broken so that Snackenburg
had to remove the empty shell with
his pocket knife. He managed to do
so before the cougar could get away
and the second shot was fatal.
