Leslie DemarlH, who lives near the
Dellaven school house above Milton.
The first of the week some campers
stopped over night near the Dcmarls
place,' and the next morning made an
early departure, taking several shocks
of hay from an adjoining field. The
owner of the hay traced the thieves
to the edgo of the timber, where he
found them feeding their horses. He
demanded the return of his property,
but being alono and unarmed against
three men, he was laughed at and told
to return and say nothing more of the
affair, or he would bo given a sound
thrashing. The advice he was obliged
to take, under the circumstances.

of the machine and severely bruised
herself. As she started to step to the

to which sho was holding flew open
and was the cause of her Inning her
balance. Milton Eagle.

It is said these wild fowls are more

the same physical laws, and suffer
alike from the same physical disturb-
ances rtnd weaknesses, peculiar to
their sex. Every woman, no matter
what her station In lire, should re

FARMERS NEGLECT
GROWING OF FRUIT
Edmonton. Alta.. Oct. 21. "Every
fruit growing district on the north
American continent contributes its
quota of tree and vine products to
satisfy the demands of the people of
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manito
ba," said C. W. Baxter, chief fruit
Inspector for the Deminlon depart
ment of agriculture in the three prai
rie provinces, in an Interview here
today, adding among other things:
"Nowhere In all Canada Is money
spent more freely for fruits of all
kinds than in the three provinces
mentioned, nor do I know of any
other districts where the people de
mand better grades. As a whole, they
are lavish with their money, ready
and willing to pay liberally for the
best the markets afford. It appears
that money is no object If the quality
of the products Is satisfactory."
Mr. Baxter said the farmers are so
engrossed in wheat, barley, oats and
flax, for which they receive handsome
returns, that the possibilities In fruit
growing are perforce neglected. Some
attention Is paid to mixed farming, In
cluding dairying, hog-ralsing and
trucking, In central Alberta and other
favored districts in the prairie prov
inces, but not what should be. He
predicted that the time .will come
when, with closer settlement, the far
mers will turn their attention to fruit
growing. There will also be more di
versified agriculture.
"The Edmonton district especially
Is admirably adapted for the grow
ing of Russian apples, a hardy var
iety suited to the extremes of tem
perature," Mr. Baxter continued. "The
surrounding woodlands form a natur
al windbreak, the solt la fertile,
warm and permanent, and contains
the elements necessary to fruit grow
lng. There is also a great future for
small fruits of all kinds. Land is too
cheap at present to force the growing
of fruits, but It will come in time.
Wheat growing anywhere is a specu
lation at best, while diversified farm
ing Is a business which grows from
year to year.

GAME KILLED BY
BAND OF INDIANS
La Grande, Ore., Oct. 21. Indians
from Fort Lapwal reservation in
Idaho have been so free to cross in
to Oregon and kill Wallowa county
game that two deputy game wardens
have been spending a week driving
them out George Mitchell of Enter
prise and W. E. Leffel of Joseph,
bearing that the Indians were hunt
ing In the eastern part of the county,
went to the Blffly Meadow pasture,
and then proceeded eastward to
Snuke river, striking it at the mouth
of the Imnaha. They crossed the
headwaters of several creeks and
found traces of an Indian hunting
party, but the aborigines apparently
got wind of the coming of the state
officials, and fled before them, back
Into Idaho.
Mr. Mitchell returned at the close
of the week, but Mr. Leffel and Ly
man Beecher continued the hunt be
tween Imnaha and Snake rivers. Joe
Clemmons of Buckhorn Springs re
ported that three Indians had cross
ed the Imnaha and had gone into the
rugged country east of that river.
It appears there were at least two
bands of Indians. The first was trail
ed in the ride from the pasture to
the Snake river. There were at least
two squaws in this party. The other
party went southeast and may still
be In this county. In this second par
ty a prominent Indian named Phillip
Is supposed to be the leader.
Philip McFarland from the Ida
ho reservation ,took out a Wallowa
county hunting license not long ago
and got the legal limit of deer very
short?-. He left the county then, but
it is rumored he has done some hunt
ing here since.
