A New Instrument
An attachment for hoe drills as illus
trated here has two very valuable and
important features which every progressive farmer will
appreciate at oaec. They are made to
fit any hoe, are easily adjusted and
answer the double purpose of regulating
the depth of sowing and at the same time
press the soil firmly around the grain
thus insuring immediate germination.
Splendid results are obtained from
their use.

British East African Women Almost
Hovolt Following Governor's
Dictum.
London. The dlfflcu'ties of the
clergymen and social reforms of more
enlightened countries in their efforts
to compel the fair sex to put more
cloth Into their skirts pale Into insig
nificance beside the troubles of the
local governor of Inahmbane, British
East Africa, who has almost caused
war by ordering the native maid
ens to attire themselves in European
garb.
The order particularly insisted that
the native women should not appear
n public without si irts under pain
of some grave pentlty not specified.
Never was an apparently Innocent
sumptuary law received with such an
outburst of rebellion. The commer
cial council signed In a body and the
Indian store keepers who deal In the
articles of attire favored by the na
tive ladies threatened to shut up shop
in protest. The native belles took
even more drastic action by refusing
to come near Inhambane at all, with
the result that the town was soon In
danger of a famine in vegetables,
egg", poultry and other necessary
food supplies. The women who lived
In town prepared to leave.
The opposition became, too hot for
the governor, who withdrew the ob
noxlus decree, and the belles of In
hambane again go about in their
scant native costumes.
