While there were no sales of hogs at North Portland today beyond $8.8n total arrivals of 16 head going at that figure, the market remains very firm. With only a handful of stuff avail able in the sw ine division, the market could not be anything but favorable. Htrength was shown for hogs at other centers. Montana Cotde Come. Three loads of cattle came forward fiom Montana to North Portland to day. These with a single load of California stuff formed the total ar rivals for the day. Some effort Is being made by kill ers to beat down the prices but they have failed generally, although some of the recent prices have been frac tionally below those previously secur ed by shippers. Gray squirrels on John V. . Rockefeller's Pocantico Hills estate have taken up glofing. according to Hiram Revere, who lives up that way. And what's more, he says they are gambling for nuts. Mr. Rockefeller last year bought hundreds of gray squirrels and turn ed them loose on his estate. He likes to fee them scamper over the golf links, and often is amused when a lost ball Is captured by a squirrel and carried off to a hole in a tree. Revere says he was going down through the Rockefeller etate, near the county house road, the other morning when ho noticed a number of squirrels on the green. He was curious to see what they were doing, and hid behind a tree. "It was the prettiest exhibition of puttin' I ever paw," said Revere. "Two big squirrels were playing the game and there were a dozen others stand ing around rootin'. 'Pon my wor.l. when one squirrel would make a good put the gallery would set up the wild est chatter. They had a golf ball and were usin' the ball to the end of the green and then one squirrel would hope on his hind legs, give his tali a twist and send the ball straight for the hole.
