usual policy, the state board 'of par
dons, of which Governor Simeon E.
Baldwin is the head grantel pardons
to two life term murderers, one of
them being old John Warren, 74
years old, who is the longest confin
ed convict in the country, having en
tered the state prison at Wethersfield,
December 14, 1859, for the murder of
his wife, two years before the civil
war. The other lifer pardoned Is
John Hawley, a Bridgeport negro who
was imprisoned October 7, 1892, for
the murder of his wife, Mary Munson,
who Hawley's sister's death bed con
fession recently proved to have been
shot and beat to death by Hawieys
Jealous friends.
Warren will leave the prison wans
and will be a care for the rest of his
days to his brother, Joel Warren of
Manfleld. His case Is well known,
though the crime happened more
than a half century ago when ne was
a vniine man of 21. He was enamored
with another woman and tried to rid
himself of his bride, whom he heia
under the waters of Roaring Brook
in Wlllineton until the bubbles ceas
ed to gurgle. The body was found in
the bushes and Warren was senienceu
to life after he had confessed and
had agreed to plead guilty.

the representatives of the sugar trust
are to go free in return for their tes

Not only will government employes
be Implicated In the frauds, but sev
eral men rated as wealthy will be ar
rested. These men are connected
with an independent refinery which
has antagonized the sugar trust. Su
gar trust men declare they have reap
ed the benefits from the frauds and
havo given evidence ngalnst the offi
cers of the American company for
doing the thing by which they profited.

Singular Ceremony on the Deck of a
Liner at Philadelphia.
Philadelphia. Seven blushing girls
became the brides of seven embar
rasssed young men through one cere
mony when the liner Ancona docked
nt the foot of Vine street. The brides
were getting their first glimpse of
America and their swains were await
ing them. The ceremony which
made fourteen seven was performed
by Rev. Father Sclabrella of the
Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
He had acted as the matrimonial
agent In bringing the young men and
young women together. The cere
muny was performed on the deck of
the vessel while hundreds of persons
looked on.
DINNER FOR 43 CAPITALISTS.
Daniel (1. Held Has Ten Detectives to
Keep Away Uninvited.
Tarrytown, N. Y. Danled G. Reid
gave such an exclusive dinner last
night to forty-three capitalists that
none but the guests were allowed in
side the grounds. Ten detectives were
stationed about the estate to keep out
those who had not been invited. The
dinner began at 8 o'clock and after
that there was a cabaret show and
minstrel performance. Mr. Reld's
butler said the dinner was only a
quiet little affair prior to Mr. and
Mrs. Reid leaving next Wednesday
for Europe.

ship" of the "bride line" thirty pretty
brides-to-be, from Glasgow, arrived
here and were met by thirty prospec
tive bridegrooms from the middle' west
who after seeing the sights of Xew

women were passengers on board the
Cameronla of the Anchor line. There
were sixty passengers, the brides-to-be
constituting half of them. Most of
the girls came here to wed "bonnie
