MAKES A FAST
On May 25th the steamer Cyclops
of the "Blue Funnel Line" left Qo
Icahoma. having in Its cargo 1260
bales of silk valued at $565,000. On
Saturday, June 8th at 2:45 p. m , this
silk, loaded in five buggage cars with
a passenger coach for the crew, left
Tacoma bound for St. Paul over the
Northern Pacific and running spe
cial. This train reached St. Paul at
9:30 p. m., Monday June 10th, where
It was turned over to the Burlington
road en route to Chicago and from
there to New York was carried over
the Pennsylvania system.
The train traveled over the Nortth
ern Pacific, including the crossing of
both the Cascade and Rock mountain
range, at an average rate of speed of
36 miles, an hour including all stops
and twelve changes of engines. The
dlHtance traveled between Tacoma
and St. Paul, 1904 miles, vas made
In 52 hours and 45 minutes. These
bales of silk were transported 4259
miles acros the Pacific ocean, 1904
miles over the Northern Pacific, 431
miles over the Burlington, and 907
miles over the Pennsylvania road,
making a total of 7501 miles in all
from the starting point to destination.
NOTICE OF STREET IMPROVE
MENT. Whereas, the Surveyor of The City
of Pendleton did on the 15th day of
June, 1912, under direction and by
requirement of the Common Council
file plans and specifications for an
appropriate improvement of Court
street, in The City of Pendleton from
the west line of Main street to the
west line of Ash street, together with
the estimates of the work to be done
and the probable cost thereof, with
a statement of the lots, parts of lota
and parcels of land to be benefited by
such Improvement, and the percent
age of the total cost of improvement
which each of such lots, parts of lots
and parcels of land should pay on ac
count of the benefits to be derived
from such improvement; and
Whereas, the Council has exam
ined such plans and specifications and
found -the same satisfactory and the
estimates therefor to be in accordance
with the probable cost of such work;
and
Whereas, the. property recommend
ed by the City Surveyor to be includ
ed within the boundaries of the dis
trict benefited Is, in the Judgment of
the Common Council properly to be.
included within such Improvement
district, and no property is excluded
therefrom which should properly be
included therein; and
Whereas, the improvement of the

of The City of Pendleton that it is
expedient to improve, and it is hereby

ment of said portion of Court street,
prepared by Geary Klmbrell, City
Surveyor, filed with the City Recorder
on the 15th day of June, 1912, which
plans and specifications are hereby
particularly referred to; and be it
further
Resolved, That the plans and speci
fications and estimates for such im
provement, as prepared by the City
Surveyor and filed with the Recorder
of The City of Pendleton on the 15th
day of June, 1912, be and they are
hereby approved and adopted; and
be it further
Resolved, that the cost of making
such improvement shall be a charge
and lien upon all lots, parts of lots
and parcels of lands to be benefited
by such Improvement, and the own
ers of such lots, part of lots and par
cels of land so specially benefited by
such improvement shall be liable for
the payment of the costs thereof;
and be it further
Resolved that an assessment district
is hereby created to be known
as assessment district Xo. 17,
embracing the property to be
assessed for the payment of such im
provement, which assessment district
shall Include all lots, parts of lots and
parcels of land lying and being with
in the district bounded and described
as follows, to-wit: c-ommencing at
the northeast corner of Block 3, In
the Original Town of Pendleton, and
running thence southerly 50 feet to
the southeast corner of lot 1 in said
Block 3, thence westerly to the south
west corner of said Lot 1, thence
southerly 125 feet to the center of
said Block 3, thence running south
66 degrees 24 minutes west through
the center of the said Block 3 and
through the centers of Blocks 17, 18,
19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 in
Arnold and Haley's addition, and con
tinuing on said course to a point 100
feet west of the west line of Ash
street in The City of Pendleton; thence
at right angles northerly across Court
street 410 feet to a point 175 feet
north of the north line of Court
street in The City of Pendleton;
thence at right angles easterly and
parallel with the north line of Court
street 830 feet to the center of Lot 3,
Block 27, in Arnold and Raley's ad
dition to the Town of Pendleton, to
the toe of the levee; thence following
the toe of the levee north 83 degrees

street twenty-five (25) feet to a point

the center of Block 1, in Original
Town of Pendleton 130 feet to the
center of said Block 1, thence south
erly through the center of said Block
1 to the northwest corner of Lot 6 in
said Block 1, thence easterly to the
northeast corner or said Lot 6,
thence southerly to the place of be
ginning; and be it further
Resolved, that a copy of this res
olution, together with the notice that
the Surveyor's estimate of the pro
portion of the cost of said work be
charged against east lot, part of lot
and parcel of land, as on file In the
office of the City Recorder, be pub
lished for a period of ten days in the
East Oregonian. which newspaper is
hereby designated by the Council for
the publication thereof.
And notice is further given that
the Surveyor's estmiate of the pro
portion of the cost of said work to be
charged against each lot, rart of lot,
and parcel of land within the assess
ment district in sa'd resolution de
scribed is on file in the office of tho
City Recorder.
