tive points recentl has In a measure
reduced the great differential that
has existed between the price here
and the cost of landing supplies from
the Missouri river territory. How
ever, today's advices, while telling of
a weaker and lower price at South
Omaha, makes the top there 2 l-2c
above ' what it was last week, there
fore forcing this addition to the cost
of bringing stock here from there.
On the basis of today's values at the
Missouri river market, eastern swine
cost $7.27 1-2 t land here and at
other Pacific northwest points. The
t et price available recently here has
been $6.75, which still makes the dif
ferential between the local price and
the cost of getting eastern supplies
here very heavy.
Today's run of hogs at North Port
land, 314 head, compares with 449
head received both Monday and Tues
day of last week, Monday being a
holiday.

Cattlu Extremely Strong.
The cattle situation la one of ex
treme strength. There was a run of
249 head today, compared with 324
head last Tuesday, the latter Includ
ing Monday's arrivals, while those of
today do not.
Prices obtained in the cattle divis
ion retain the extreme strength of
last week, prices being just as high
for similar quality. Heifers sold 25c
higher at $6.50.
Notwithstanding the expectations
of a weaker tone in the cattle trade
east of the Rockies, the market Is re
ally beginning to show added strength.
For Instance, at South Omaha there
was an advance of 10c in low grade
stuff. This Is expected to have an
effect upon shipments In this direc
tion from Montana and Wyoming
points.
Situation Is Changed.
As matters stood formerly, while
the Missouri river market was high
er for high quality cattle, ordinary
offerings were in reality lower than
here. Therefor on that basis the ship
ments would be influenced In this di
rection. Recently, however, there
has been a tendency at the Missouri
river point to advance the price of
ordinary quality cattle while holding
the best stuff stationary. This has
changed the situation to such an ex
tent that a further advance here must
be forced before it will be profitable
lor the eastern stuff to come In this
collection.

'I PULL OUT
THE GRAY HAIRS
"Pull out one gray hair and a doz
en will take Its place" Is an old saying,
which is, to a great extent, true, if
no steps are taken to stop the cause.
When gray hairs appear It Is a sign
that Nature needs assistance. It is
Nature's call for help. Gray hair,
dull, lifeless ha'r. or hair that is fall
ing out, is not necessarily a sign of
advancing age, for there are thou
sands of elderly peop'.e with perfect
heads of hair without a single streak
of gray.
When gray halr9 come, or when the
hair seems to be lifeless or dead,
some good, reliable halr.restoring
treatment should be resorted to at
once. Special'sts say that one of the
best preparations to use In the old
fashioned "sage tea" wh'ch our grand
parents used. The best preparation
of this kind is Wyetn's Sage and Sul
phur Hair Remedy, a preparation of
domestic sage and sulphur, scientifi
cally compounded with Inter dis-eov-rred
ha'r tonics and stimu'ants, the
whole mixture be'ng carefully bal
anced and tested by experts.
Wyeth's Sage and tulphur Is clean
and wholesome and perfectly harm
less. It refreshes dry parched hair,
removes dandruff and gradually re
stores faded or gray hair to its nat
ural color.
Don't delay another minute. Start
using Wyeth's Sago and Sulphur at
once and see what a difference a few
days' treatment wi'.l make in your
hair.
This preparation Is offered to the
public at fifty cents a bottle, and is
recommended and sold by special
agent, Pendleton Drug Co.

a Solid Scab. Boils Broke Out
-' During Teething. Ussd Cuticura

"My son vsa tbout three weeks old when
I noticed a brcakins-out on his cheeks, from
which a watery substance oozed. A snort
time after, hht arms, shoulders and breast
broke out also, and in a
few clays became a solid
cab. I became alarmed,
and called our family
physician who at once
pronounced the disease
eczema. The little fellow
wm under his treatment
for about three months.
By the end of that time,
he seemed no better. I
becamft dtacnllrsLcrprl I
oroppea tne doctor s treatment, and com
menced the use of Cuticura Soap and Oint
ment, and in a few days noticed a marked
change. The eruption on lih cheeks was
almost healed, and his shoulders, arms and
breast were decidedly better. When he was
about seven months old, all trace of the
eczema was gone.
"During his teething period, his head and
face were broken out in boils which I cured
with Cuticura Soap and Ointment. Surely
he must have been a great sufferer. During
the time of teething and from the time I
dropped the doctor's treatment, I used the
Cuticura Soap and Cuticura Ointment,
nothing else, and when two years old he wag
the picture of health. His complexion
was soft and beautiful, and his head a mass
of silky curls. I had been afraid that he would
never be well, and I feel that I owe a preat
deal to the Cuticura Remedies." (Signed)

SOLDIERS GUARD MILLIONS.
Bonk of England RuUtting Nightly
Held by Annod Troops.
London, Eng. Visitors to the me
tropolis who happen to be in the vi
cinity of the Bank of England about
6:30 o'clock in the evening may wit
ness one of the most interesting cus
toms in London. For it Is at that
time that a detachment of armed
guards march into the bank with fix
ed bayonets for the purpose of guard
ing the 20,000,000 pounds in gold and
silver with which the vaults of the
"Old Lady of Threadneedle Street'
are usually stocked. This custom says
the Pall Malla Gazette, dates back to
the Gordon riots in 1870. when it waa
deemed necessary to call In soldiers
to prevent the mob from raiding the
bank. Since then the bank has been
protected every night by a detach
ment of guards.
The detachment usually numbers
about thirty men, in parade dress,
with fixed bayonets and loaded am
munition belts, In charge of two ser
geants and a lieutenant. These are
the on'y troops that have the privil
ege on ordinary occasions, of march
ing through the city of London with
fixed bayonets.
For guarding the bank the soldiers
receive extra pay. which Is given to
them as soon as they enter the bank
each night. Privates and drummer
boy get 1 shilling each, corporals 1
shilling and 6 pence, and sergeants 2
shillings and 6 pence. This sum is
exclusive of the subaltern's allowance.
The aggregate cost of guard'ng the
Bank of England is about 1000 pounds
per annum.
. The bank authorities do all they
can for the soldiers' comfort. They
provide them with extra blankets for
the winter and a selection of books,
while the lieutenant In charge has a
snug little room, a dinner being
brought Into him from a neighboring
tavern. He Is also allowed to enter
tain two guests, the only stipulation
being that they must depart before
midnight.
Failing any emergency call, the ma
jority of the soldiers merely perform
sentry-go once a night for an hour.
They are posted throughout the rooms
of the banks and In the court, the
sentries being Increased in the middle
of tlie night and remaining on duty
till the detachment returns to bar
racks at 6 o'clock In the summer and
7 In the winter.
With regard to the lieutenant there
is a curious stipuation that he shall
only have one bottle of wine for liim
self, and two for each of his guests,
while the regulation Is that each sol
dler shall not be allowed " more than
one pint of stout from the small can
teen which lias been established In
side the bank for the convenience of
the night guard.
