The local railroad strike reached a crisis when two meetings were held, one in the Commercial club rooms by the busi ness men, and one in the opera house by the strikers. Neither of the meet ings waa known to the other until late in the evening. The strikers had with them Joseph P. Ryan, who de livered an address showing the strik ers' side of the controversy, and he appealed to the public to aid the strikers' financially and morally. The meeting was opened with prayer, a minister or representative from every church in the city having been espe cially invited to attend. The meeting held by the business men was for the purpose of solving the problem of allowing the men, now working at the shops in place of the strikers, the privilege of coming out of the stockade without danger of be ing assaulted. Conditions are now such that the workmen, because of trouble with the strikers, and the fact that one of their number was recent ly found badly beaten up, lying un conscious in an alley, fear to venture ouf and they are obliged to go to Pendleton or Baker City to do their trading, the company furnishing them free transportation. A committee was appnln'ed to handle the matter In such a way as to insure the men work ing in the shops protection when they wish to come out on the streets for any purpose. The business men con sider the present condition a disgrace to the community, and will go the limit to correct conditions and extend protection to th"e strikebreakers against assaults on the part of strik ers.
