Evans, Colo. Turkey gobblers have
been known to care for motherless

twenty eRs, and results aro anxious
ly watched.
A short time ago Mrs. Jones dis
covered the gobbler nesting on seven
turkey eggs. Phe attempted to chase
him from the nest, but he fought her
off. He continued to hold the place,
and becoming convinced that the gob

owner decided It might as well be a
large one and put thirteen more eggs
under him.
It In said the gobbler Is proving
more faithful to his Job than the av

stained, varnished or fin
ished in any way, there's
an Acme Quality Kind
to fit the purpose.
Strong Reasons
for Fall Painting
I 1. The wood is thoroughly dry.
Summer s sun has removed all moisture.
2. Paint penetrates deeper into
'dry wood.
The deeper it goes the better it holds.
3. Fall weather is warm, dry and
dependable.
Little danger of cold, damp, rainy days,
which endanger the durability of the paint.
4. Wet weather decays and de
stroys unprotected surfaces.
Lack of paint means unsightly and less
valuable property.
5. Fall painting keeps out winter
moisture.
The greatest enemy to the life and beauty of
all structures.
Ask us about ACME QUALITT HOUSE
PAINT. It insures the greatest protection and
beauty, at the least cost per year of service
Questions cheerfully answered.
(From Thursday's Journal.)
Vith packers drawing upon their
supplies held In feed lots there Is a
weaker Instead of firmer tone In the
cattle trade at North Portland today.
While fancy stuff Is not coming
forward, sales of today indicate that
the market may be considered a frac
tion lower than for similar goods re
cently. Broadly speaking there is only a
nominal demand fur cattle at North
Portland just now and shippers are
taking many chances as buyers have
t be Induced to take hold by the of
fering of lower figures.
Receipts for the day were 178 head
compared with 216 last Thursday.
At South Omaha the cattle trade
was steady to strong, with top steers,
7.2affi 7.90, and best cows and heifers
al $4 SOT; 5.50.

Hojr Market Sternly.
Steadiness was shown in the hog
trade at North Portland this morning,
with a run of 236 head for the day,
compared with 155 yesterday, 38
Tuesday, 470 Monday and 843 head
last Thursday.
Sales of top stuff were made at
$7.50, although it is not likely that
any considerable number could have
been moved at this figure.
At South Omaha there was anotner
twist in the sentiment of buyers In
the swine trade, and prices held rath
er well. Tops sold there today at
$6.35, which means 16.45 to land here.
This, therefore, is 5c under the price
In effect here. Another decline at
North Portland may be .the result as
packers are getting most of their re
quirements at Missouri river points
for less money. .
Sentiment in the eastern nrnvlslnn
trade as a general rule is bearish at
this time. Traders in futn
been selling provisions freely recently.
Shorts have been anxious to dispose
of Imaginary holdings, which would
Indicate that the belief Is general that
future hog prices will be lower this
ian and winter.
North Portland hog market range:
Best light hogs s 7 SO

Notwithstanding thp renorts 1ipIii?
sent out by some interests, telling of
a firm tone in the mutton tra.lc
sheep and lamb values are weak and
depressed at North Portland. There
were no arrivals in that branch of the
yard today, but the sales of yesterday
would signify that the trade is still
filled to overflowing and would only
take further offerings at reduced
values. When fancy Mount Adams
lambs can bring no more than $4.00
the chances aro tha tother lambs
would not come within a quarter of
this.
At South Omaha there was a run
of 25,000 sheep and lambs today.
Lambs went 15c lowet while sheep
were steady. Quotations were: Lambs
