Whilu there Is a fair tone in the
heep trade, hoga and cattle are weak
er and lower.
The swine trade is suffering from
the' recent sharp decline in middle
west and eastern quotations. At
North Portland this morning toppers
sold at $8.15, or a decline of 10c from
the high level of yesterday.
As the market drops, buyer are
showing much more discrimination
than ever before. Topper must be
the real stuff or there is an Instant
shading of the quotations. Heavy
Ktuff has been selling at a wider dis
ccunt from light stuff than ever be
fore. The hogs that sold at $8.16 this
morning In the local yards averaged
from 145 to 203 pounds.
The run for the day was 303 head,
and all from local point. The de-
cre.ise in local offerings recently has
caused buyers to go slow In their pur
chases. Other Hog Markets Lose,
The local market was not the only
one to show a Ions for swirio .today. At
Omaha there was a drop of 5 to 10c
from yesterday's price which put quo
tnions for tups down to $7, This
moans $S 10 to land hero, therefore
even at the decline the local market
is still 5c above the basis that Mis
souri r.ver hogs ran be landed here
nr at other Pacific northwest points,
freight paid.

There was a heavy run of Montana
cattle it the local yards today, a to
tal of IS loads coming from there this
morning.
Tho cattle market in general is
weaker and sales are being made at
about 15c lower than the latter part
of laM week. The sale of one lot yes
terday at $5.63 for steers was not an
ipen market transaction, as the stock
had been contracted by a local meat
company prior to shipment. Accord
ing to the seller, the same stuff would
not have brought more than $5.50 In
the open market.
The lot of steers that came from
Montana was of extra good quality
and was sold nt $5.80 this morning
The animals averaged 1149 pounds.
At South Omaha there was a steady
to weaker tone In thp cattle trade
with' top steers at '$7.65 and the best
cows and heifers at -$5.65.

72 animals that averaged 203 pounds

Sheep Holding Steady.
While the Tyants of killers are quite
wj-11 supplied In the sheep and Iamb
trade, the market Is holding rather
steady and practically the same quo
tations as In effect yesterday were
continued this morning. Run of
sheep nnd lambs for the day was 588
head compared with 24 8 yesterday
and none last Wednesday.
Notwithstanding the weakness In
tho sheep trade hero there has been
practically no Improvement over the
figures at mlddel west or eastern cen
ters. At South Omaha this morning
the market was steady to slow with
lambs $4.905.25, yearlings $3.73s?
4.15; wethers $3.50 df 3.75, and ewes
$3.0003.35.

Chicago, Sept. 14. Shorts got un
der cover yesterday In the wheat
trade. They found the market weak
and lower at tho start and therefore
took that opportunity of cashing In
their sales. This brought out the
higher range of prices and while Sep
tember was the only option to close
with an advance over Tuesday, the
other two deliveries regaining all of
their early losses.

NATIVES KILL MISSIONARY.
The, Rev. E. O. Davis Meets His
Death on Duty in Guiana.
Georgetown, British Guiana. The
Rev. E. O. Davis, superintendent of
Guiana mission of the Seventh Day
Adventlsts denomination, the head
quarters of which are at Washington,
D. C, has been murdered while pros
elyting among the natives.
Washington -A cablegram receiv
ed at the headquarters of the Seventh
Day Adventists here says the Rev. E
O. Davis, superintendent of the Brit-
lh Guianan mission, was murdered
during the month of July. The mes
sage which was from the Rev. E. C.
Roger of California, who had been
sent to succeed Mr. Davis, contained
no details.
Early in May Mr. Davis wrote that
he received a call to visit some In
dians about a two months' Journey
up the Demerera river, where no
White man had. ever been. This was
the last heard from him.
Mr. Davis was about thirty-two
years of age and married, his wife ac
companying him.
