While good select light hogs for the block trade would readily bring better than $S, the stockers and feeders that came forward this mor ning sold at $7.75. One lot of very heavy hogs that averaged 3:U pounds went at the same figure. This In it self would Indicate that selected east of the mountain stuff would at least reach $8.15 or perhaps $8.25. There was a weaker tone for hogs elsewhere today. At South Omaha the market was generally about 5c lower, although feeders were down 10c. Attracted by sig nals of dhtress from Hard well Island, a barren rock near the entrance to Resurrection bay. the steamship Ber th;! on August 2d sent a small boat to the island and took off two rag ged and starving men, Charles Al exander and Alvin Anderson, who had been on the island for two months and who must have perished but for the Bertha. The men sailed from Kodiak May lltli in a dory on a prospecting voy age. About June 1st a storm upset their craft off Hardwell Island and all their provisions and outfit were lost in the tea. They managed to get ashore, but with practically noothlng but their clothes. The next day the tide washed ashore the boat, sadly battered and with all but one of the rowlocks gone. The oars also drifted to the island. The men, who had a few matches, lived for a month on mussels, clams, young gulis. seaweed and wild herbs which they cooked. The wrecked boat leaked so seri oiisly that while one man labored at the oars the other was obliged to 1-ail out the water, yet It enabled them to travel about the shores of the island in a search of food. After their niati lies gave out, about July 1st. they were able to gather the same sort of fool as before, but they could not cook It. and it was unpal atable and indigestible, and the men felt their strength failing and had begun to despair. Their wretehed nevs was increased by the fact that two yess. Is passed without noticing tlieir sisaals of distress. Ashley's shotgun was discharged when he slipped from a log. the charge boring hito his body over the left hp. The wound must have caus e.p him agonizing pain, for when he arose he was staggering through the swamp and declaiming hysterically: "Isn't this a beautiful world after looking at the hills " he was heard to say as David Jones, one of the men in the hunting party, appeared. Ashley lifted his shotgun and de liberately placed It against his head. "Don't shoot, Hill!" shouted Jones, divining his intention.. Ashley paused long enough to smile. Ho then waved his hand in farewell and pulled the trigger, fall ing to his death with the top of his skull shattered. ltAIJY SCAItKS A lU HGLAU. Alfred May, 5 Year Old, r san Kran elseo.
