were landed by fishermen at Mc
Call's Ferry today in tlio closing hours
of the 1911 shad fishing season. The

spectators on the York county shore.

Small boys seized fish weighing from
eight to ten pounds and plucklly held
on and landed them, although fre
quently .carried Into deep water. This
manner of taking the fish evades the
fish law, which prohibits use of a
seine or dip net within 100 feet of a
dam.

Jenkins is the mayor upon whom the
recall was unsuccessfully Invoked last
month.

"Shorty" Russell, a farm hand, Is
charged to a rancher named Jones,
living near Satur, Wash., the wound
being inflicted Thursday evening.
Russell has been in the employ of A.
J. Harris, a Satus rancher, whose
property Is near that of Jones.
Coke, Hurt In Aet'ldent.
Froewater, Ore. William Coke, a
rancher living near here, was seri
ously hurt yesterday when his team
ran away, throwing Mr. Coke to the
ground and dragging him for several
hundred yards under the rake. Ho
was picked ud unconscious with a I
deep gash in tho scalp and his hand
badly mangled.

Prosser, Wash. A band of 1950
sheep owned by Wissis Mercer and
Thorpe Roberts of Prosser, left here i
the first part of the week for May
wood, Wash., to be held until sold In

caped while in the corral at Maywood

Astoria Ore. Rescinding the action
taken when they rejected the Pacific
coast championship track and field
meet scheduled for August 25, the
Astoria centennial committee has ap
propriated 120,000 for the meet and
arrangements are now being com

Los Angeles. Seattle, Spokane and
Vancouver will enter for the cham

MOTHER DIES ON TRAIN
New Orleans. While en route from
Los Angeles to her daughter's home
in Klnsey, N. C. Mrs. D. H. Phillips,
mother of the lue David Graham
Phillips, the author, died suddenly
yesterday on a Southern Pacific train
a few miles west of Jennings, La.
Her body wts shipped to Madison,
Ind., for burial. Mrs. Phillips was 82
years old and had been in failing
health since the tragic death of her
son in New York.

Weston, Ore., June 20. A large
crowd is expected to come to tho
Mountain Strawberry Day at Weston
July 1. Muny Umatilla county people
will begin their Fourth of July at
Weston on the first ot July. This day
will be a treat to all as there will be
a free banquet of lemonade, straw
berries and cream and cake made by
the pretty ladies of Weston. A free
ball game, horse show and broncho
busting, along with many other sports
will be among the Interesting fea
tures of the day.
Tho people on tho mountain wish
to show the people of this county and
the other counties what they can
raise and on what a small amount of
land a family can make a living. An
other object of this day Is to give all
a chance to enjoy themselves, both
old and young alike.
Of Weston Citizens.
Mrs. George Sowers and little
daughter are In Weston from Dayton
to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm
Drlskel. Mrs. Goodnight is in Weston from
Washington where she has been prov
ing up on her homestead. Mrs. Good
night is visiting her daughter, Mrs.
Josephine Duncan. She will remain
through the summer months.
John Beeves, formerly a pastor of
the Methodist church of Weston, was
in the city on a visit to friends during
the week.
Mrs. Alice Banister returned to her
mother's accompanied by her daugh
ter, Mrs. Lillian Swarlz and children
Mrs. Banister has been in Dayton for
trie past few weeks.
Dr. Clise, an eye specialist from
Walla Walla, has been in Weston for
the past week doing work for the
people of Weston.
Jerry Myers, an uncle of Mrs. James
Compton, who has been visiting her
for the past week, has returned to
his home in Dayton.
George Daubner, who has been
farming his ranch near Cold Springs,
was in Weston Saturday on his way
to Pendleton to spend a short time
with Ws wife and children.
Business Changes Hands.
The Farmers' Meat Market at Wes
ton has been sold by Mr. Crawford to
Fay Le Grow and Jinks Taylor, both
of Athena. These two men also own
a meat market at Athena, so Chas.
Crawford will remain in Weston and
conduct the business for the new
proprietors.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lane of Walla
Walla Walla were In Weston Saturday
to attend the social dance.
John McRae of Weston spent Sat
urday and Sunday on his ranch near
Hel.x.
Edgar Smith of Walla Walla was In
Weston Saturday for the purpose of
Instructing the ladies' band.
Miss Grace Gregg and the Misses
Ethel and Edna Smock were in town
from their home on the mountain to
attend the dance.
Jack Keefe was In Weston Satur
day and Sunday.
James Sturlgs of Pendleton made
a short visit to Weston in his auto.
Mrs. Marvel Watts of Athena
brought an auto full of people over
to Weston Saturday. Among them
were Mrs. J. Winship and Mrs. L.
Smith.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Winn are in
Weston spending a few days with
Mrs. Winn'es parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Frank King of this place.
Weston Ixses 3 Games.
The baseball games played Satur
day were very unlucky for Weston.
The "Weston's Second" team played
the "Pea Ridge" team. The Weston
seconds were beaten, 6 to 4. The
Weston "Nevcrwas" played the Athe
na "Want to bets" and were beaten,
11 to 6.
The Pendleton-Weston game came
out just as unlucky as the Saturday
games with a mournful score of 6 to
2 in favor of the Buckarooes.
At the school meeting at Weston
which was held a few days ago, O.
M. Richmond went out and Joseph
Wurzer was elected to his place.
Harlow Richmond nnd family, of
Helix, were In Weston Saturday vis
iting relatives of both Mr. and Mrs.
Richmond's.
Miss Viva Warren, who spent a
few days with friends In Pendleton
during the week, has returned to her
home In Weston.
C. I. Avery, manager of the Blue

Saturday on business.
