O
In tho Stockyards.
Hogs Nominal; lot sells at
$.75 for tops.
Cattle Market about GOc
lower; grass tops at $8.65.
Sheep Rent lambs firm;
sheep generally lower.
Those that had cattle to sell on to
day's market nt North Portland were
completely at the mercy of buyers and
quite sharply were prices lowered in
consequence.
There was no run of cattle today
but a large per cent of the huge ar
rivals over Sunday were carried over
and sold at a smart reduction in pre
vious values.
Grass cattle are top around $5.75
or within a fraction of that while
good fed stuff Is down to $5.85 and,
$5.90 or about DOo lower than pre
vious sales.
The slump In cattle here Is remark
able Inasmuch as it did not occur
when the great arrivals were first
presented. This was not due to any
lack of bearlshncss on the pait of
buyers but to the dogged tendency
of receivers who wanted to protect
their country patrons against such a
vicious slaughter of prices,
Portland Is Now liOwest.
While up to this time the Portland
market has been perhaps one of the
best in the entire country and on this
account cattle were taken away from
competing markets whenever wanted,
today's slump here places the balance
of trade elsewhere. Cattle were quot
ed weak at South Omaha today with
steer prices ranging between $5.75
and $6.10 and cows from $4.75 to
$5.75. The price being offered fir
top cows at Omaha is therefore with
in a few fractions of the best price ob
tainable for steers at North Port
land. The cattle market here is passing
Into the new season with quick
strides, and It Is unlikely that there
will be any material offering of fed
stuff here after the present week.
Grass stuff will now come forward
In liberal lots and the market will be
placed entirely upon the basis In
fact. U Is practically so at th8 mo
ment, as the difference in the price
of grass and fed stuff is very small.
The margin Is expected to narrow.
General range of cattle:
lit-st steers $6.00

Hog Market Is Firm.
Only a handful of swine came into
tho Portland yards today and there
fore regular prices were not fully
tested. The outlook seems quite hope
ful, although there was a further
weakening of values at South Omaha
today. Prices there dropped 6c to 10c
which puts tops at $6.95 or $7.05 to
land here. This is still 15c above the
best price that has been offered here
recently.
With local packers getting all their
requirements of hogs from Nebras
ka and with only a limited amount
of local swine available for the trade
recently it would bo difficult at this
time to state exactly what the market
at North Portland would do If a doz
en loads of local swine came for
ward. Nominal swine values at North
Portland:
Best blockers $6.85
Medium light 6.75
Heavy packers ... 6.60
Rough packers $5 6.60
Kluvp Market Is Easier.
An easier feeling prevails through
out the sheep and lamb trade here,
although extra select quality is still
desired at former prices In the lamb
market.
There was quite a fair run of sheep
and lambs In tho North Portland
yards today, totals being 711 head,
compared with 846 a week ago.
At South Omaha there was only a
limited supply of sheep and lambs In
sight today. Sheep were steady with
lambs lower nt $6.75 7.75, ewes
$4.25 i 4.60, wethers $4.40 5? 5 and
yearlings $4.75 & 6.35.
New Alfalfa Hay Soon.
New' crop nlfalfa hay will bo offer
ed to the trado within the next 10
(days. Cutting of tho new crop has
started at various points in tho in
terior, although operations have not
yet becomo general. The season for
cutting the first crop has started at
various points in the interior, al
though operations have not yet bo
come general. The season for cutting
the first crop is several weeks later
than normal, owing to the deferred
warm weal her.
With the new crop in sight, the hay
market has taken on a tone of easi
ness, although as yet no weakness is
showing. Reliable reports from va
rious d'striets in Oregon, Washing
ton and Idaho state that this year's
crop is likely to be the heaviest in
hli'tory.
For that reason buyers are now
buying sparingly and in a hand to
mouth manner.
Wheal market Is firm with prac
t'cally no offerings now being , put
forward by growers. Quotations are
nominally the same.
- Coarse grains are firm but show no
change in prices,

A Charming Woman
Is one who is lovely In face, form,
mind and temper. But its hard for
a woman to be charming without
health. A weak, sickly woman will
be nervous and irritable. Constipa

ples, blotches, skin eruptions and a
wretched complexion. But Electric
Bitters always prove a godsend to
women who want health, beauty and
friends. They regulate stomach, liv

give strong nerves, bright eyes, pure
breath, smooth, velvety skin, lovely
complexion and perfect health. Try
