memoration of the first land engage
ment of tho civil war, which occurred
at Phlllppl, In Barbour county, Va.,
now West Virginia, on the morning
of the third of June, 1861, a semi
centennial reunion of the veterans of
both the blue and tho gray was com
menced here today ami will extend
through the week. The program op
ened with a grand assembly today,
and there will bo special features for
each day 'of the week, closing with
the observance of Phllippl Battle Day
on Saturday. A reunion of Union and
Confederate veteran v.411 be held to
morrow. Many men of prominence have been
Invited to speak here during the
week, including President Taft, Theo
dore Hooseveit, Speaker Champ Clark,
William J. Bryan, Congressman Rich
mond Pearson Hobson and Governor

(Chick) Evans, Jr., of Chicago, rep
resenting I'mde Sam the annual tour
nament of the British golf champion
ship commenced today on the famous
lings at Prestwick. Although pitted
aga'nst the best amateur golfers of
England and of Scotland, the home
of the royal game, Evans is confi
dent that he will make a good show
ing If he does not fulfill the hope ex
pressed by President Taft that he
capture the British title for America.
Evans captured the United North
and South .championship at the April
tournament in Pinehurst, N. C,
where he played against the best
amateurs and professionals of the

Stepping outside she finds Ponus, a
Pecuot Indian, who has been badly
injured Cy a beat-. Helping him into
the' house, she binds up his wounds.
The Indian, about to depart, tells
Priscilia he will some day repay her
k.ndness. A month later Ponus
warns Priscilia that King Phillip has
again incited the Pequots to an up
rising against the whites. This time
ly warning permits the settlers to
reach the nearby blockhouse where
after a sharp conflict, the attack of
the Indians Is repulsed.

story of a girl whs past life which
she was trying to forget, came to
light and nearly wrecked her life.
Hounded and blackmailed by one who
knew her past, she is finally forced
to steal from her husband to keep
her tormenter silent. By a clever ruse
her husband discovers her guilt and
forgives her freely.
"The Midnight Express." Itala. A
wonderfully exciting story. A bank
porter knowing a box of gold is go
ing by express and that It will be
transperred at a lonely station, has
himself shipped to the same station
In a box. The watchman discovers
him getting out of the box and tele
phones for aid, while struggling with
the robber, while the thief's partner
is trying to batter in the doors to aid
the burglar. The police arrive Just
In time. A fine scene is the midnight
express on its flight, taken by moon
light. An extra strong story.

A comedy, showing the popular com
