Rumor has been busy concerning
plans for closer relations between the
Imperial houses of Germany and Aus
tria. Princess Victoria Louise, the
kaiser's onl daughter, accompanied
her father to Vienna, and her pres
ence has revived the report of her im
pending betrothal to the Archduke
Charles Francis Joseph, the Austrian
emperor's nephew. The princess is
10 and the archduke 24. so In point
of ace it would be a suitable match.
Th young couple saw a good deal
of each other during the visit. The
alliance would no doubt be popular
among the Germans in Austria. The
difference in religion Is an obstacle
and it is thought unlikely that the
princess would become a Roman Cath
olic in view of the very definite reli
gious opinions known to be held by
her mother. On the other hand mar
riage wih protestant princesses are
not unknown in the Austrian imperial
family, although none has taken place
in the last few decades. The mother
"f Maria Theresa and the consort of
Charles VI, of Austria, was a protestant.
gostion has been made,, although no
confirmation of the report can be ob
tained from Senator Bourne.
It is known the Taft organization
!? somewhat worried over the Oregon
situation. The Taft managers would
prize the delegates from Oregon far
beyond their numerical strength be
cause Oregon will be the first stnt'
to express its choice by popular vote
tor president. As an opening gun
next spring Oregon will have the force
of an entire battery.

London. April 21. Foreign affairs
sometimes have a very unusual influ-

Walla Walla, Wash., April 21. As
endless as the stream of water that
flows In the Columbia river si ems to
be ilie stream of human lives drifting
up and down the hanks of that river.
County Kiiginecr Low W. Loehr, who
has just spent several days in Wallula
on official business, said:
"I believe there are more hoboes
going up and down the river than I
ever knew before. Hw they live is
more than I know, although fishing
si etns to bo one method.
"I saw one man who had caught a
'niiiil cat' boil it in a can and oat It
with neither salt nor bread. Others
fishing along tho bank were having
varied luck, all trying to get enough
meat to sustain life. The 'Jungles' are
full of men. Some are being attract
ed by bridge nnd construction work
up the Columbia nnd towards Spokane,
but many are merely drifting along."
Few of tho wanderers are coming
to Walla Walla. Spring work In this
part of the valley has been completed
and until harvest there will bo little
doing for the floating element.
