tion of the Presbytery of Oregon of
the United Presbyterian churches Is In
session, about 30 delegates from out
side towns being in attendance. An
open meeting was held last night at
which the service was conducted by

Substation to ho liullt.
Vancouver, Wash. That the Mount
Hood Hallway & Tower company will
expend about $25,000 in a substation
and distribution system in Vancouver
and vicinity within the next year was
announced today by J. S. Groo, local
representative of the corporation. A
lot for the substation, just east of the
Harrison, on Fifth street road, was
bought today from William K.itrulch
for $4000.
Power for this city will betransmlt-
tod through lines under the Colum
bin river, from Portland. It is ex
pected that 500 horsepower will be
furnished to Vancouver In less than
one year.

Town Huns Down Snlom Youth.

versity, was hurt today when he was
struck down by a team on Chemcketa
street. His injuries will not prove

Athena, Ore., April 11. Prepara
tions for the Umatilla County Track
Meet and Oratorical contest, which Is
to be held in this city April 29, are
being made by the Commercial asso
ciation and all will be in readiness for
that event. The track has been
graded up and it is all in shape at
the present time. Excursion trains
will be secuVed from both ways for
the contestants coming from Milton
and vicinity and Hcrmlston, Echo and
Tilot Rock.
Mr. L. J. Foss, a pioneer of Ore
gon and a long resident of this city,
since the death of his wife a few
weeks ago. is preparing to take his
departure to Prinevllle, Oregon,
where he will join his son, James
Foss. He has been a constant worker
in the Christian church of this place
and last Friday night his many
friends tendered him a farewell re
ception to show their appreciation of
the faithful services he has render
ed to the people of this community.
Contrary to all former weather rec
ords for this time of the year, this
country was visited by almost an inch
of snow last evening. A terrific wind
and dust storm preceded the snow and
rain nnd along about 5 o'clock yes
terday afternoon It turned suddenly
colder which turned the rain Into a
good heavy snow. It snowed harder
than It did any time last winter and
in an hour It had almost covered the
ground good despite tne fact that It
melted pretty fast. The storm abated
about 7 p. m. and It cleared up, but
the thermometer went down and the
slush froze all over the ground. It
is feared that some of the fruit crops
in this immediate district will be injured.
Wooriburn llomls Defeated.
Woodburn, Or. The proposition to
Issue $40,000 in bonds to erect a high
school building in this city was de
feated at a special election today by
a vote of 200 to 80.
Fish Dealer Fined $50.
Oregon City. Edwin Richard, a
fish dealer, was convicted in the Jus
tice Court today of having steelhead
salmon in his possession, during the
closed season. He was fined $50 and
costs and will appeal the case.
