Market for cattle and sheep is
steady with the latter showing addi
tional strength. There were only lim
ited arrivals for tho day, totals being
182 rattle, 08 calves and 260 sheep.
Most of the cattle that came for
ward were supplies that -were recent
ly taken off the local market for
want of demand at suitable prices and
were put on feed at the Sun Dial
ranch near Troutdalc. The best of
these brought $5.95 on today's market
.and ordinary steers went at $4.25.
Tbre was no first class cattle of
fering in the North Portland yards to
day and therefore extreme top quo
tations were not paid nor offered. The

fore In this line top quotations were
not tested during the day's trading.
Tho Mock that came forward was
sheared and therefore was about 50c
less than the same class of stock
would have brought with wool at
tached. Further weakness and price losses'
were shown in eastern hogs during
the clay. At Chicago there was a de
cline of 5c with a run 11 000 greater
than a year ago while at Omaha the
market struck- bearish sentiment and
u decline of 10c followed. Top price

llntu-r l'ut Fight.
So fierce has been the fight that
has waged in this territory during the
past season between the condensed
milk companies and the creamery In
terests, that all sides are said to be
operating at a loss.
To this condition was due the ex
treme scarcity of fresh local butter
during the past season and tho forced
importations of several times the nor
mal amount from eastern and middle
west centers for the Oregon trade.
For a like reason the price of con
densed milk was forced during the
Keason to its highest record. The
price of the canned product went to
such an extreme figure that consump
tion was curtailed and many retail
ers absolutely refused to sell the pro
duct because there was no profit in
Us handling.
Practically a similar condition ruled
In the cheese market. Condensed
milk manufacturers Invaded the ter
ritory of the Tillamook cheese mak
ers. The result was that both sides
began to bid higher for butter fat. A
raise in the price of cheese to ex
treme levels was a further result.
Wool Is Discolored.
Lack of rains and with heavy winds,
are causing discoloration of recently
shorn wool. While first samples of
wool received here were of extremely
good quality because of their clean
appearance, latest arrivals are even
worse than during recent years. A
good rain is needed . to clean the
fleece.
Shearing is now general. At North
Yakima and Prosser and at other
points along the Northern Pacific,
operations are quite extensive. Shear
ing is progressing quite favorably
around Echo, Ore., and operations
have started at Heppner. At Arling
ton shearing will start within a day
or so. .
Market for wool shows no improve
ment and growers are beginning to
realize that the trade cannot offer
the quotations of a year ago.
Egg Storage Is On.
Egg storago is under full swing In
this market. Receipts are heavier
but thesurplus is being quickly re
moved to the ice, houses. Prices rule
from 21c for the fresh market to 20
i 20 1-2 for storage.
Front street trade is hurt consid
erably by the shipment of liberal
supplies from the country direct to re
tailers. Most of these shipments are
for a far greater amount than the re
tailers can use and they are forced
to throw the balance of the arrivals
upon the market at cut quotations.

TODAY'S IJIRTIIDAY SKETCH.
The subject of today's sketch is the
famous daughter of a famous moth
er. She is Mrs. Maude Howe Elliot,
the youngest daughter of the late Ju
lia Ward Howe and wife of the cele
brated English painter, John Elliot.
Today through her writings, Mrs. El
liot bids fair to be the equal in liter
ary genius of her more than distin
guished mother. She has had an In
teresting life. During many of the
later years of her mother's life this
youngest daughter was her compan
ion and grew up with all the tradi
tions of the Illustrious Howe family.
At one time she lectured In Chicago,
St. Paul and other cities as well as in
New York and Boston.
A great deal of Mrs. Elliot's life
has been spent in Home, and there her
drawing room haB been the center of
American intellectual life In Italy.
She is a brilliant conversationalist and
in .'he several volumes which she has
published has given more than an Im
pression of literary genius. Mrs. El
liot began her literary career early,
her first work being a novel. She has
written much on the social life In
Home and other European cities. Be
fore her mother's death, Mrs. Elliot's
readings at Newport were the clos
ing events of the season. These read
ings were always held In the drawing
rooms of the richest women In the
summer colony. It was through the
success of these readings that Mrs.
Elliot decided to go upon the lecture
platform In many other cities of the
country.
