TAKE SHARP ADVANCE
CONDITIONS IN EAST AND

Movement of Western Mutton May

ve
an
(Monday's Journal.)
Sheep market here is showmg an
Improvement, as exclusively forecast
by the Journal recently. The Im
provement In the east and central
west ha already had its effect upon
the local trade and aales were goner
ally made here at an advance of 26o
over what could be obtained for sim
ilar Quality a few days" ago.
th.. week's market started with a
ry fair shipment of cattle and sheep
"J nne load of hogs. There was a
S....Y..., Mtronirthenlng of the sheep
trade In tho east today. At unicago
the market was strong with no
change In prices but an advance of
a dime-was quoted at South Omaha,
with the Increasing disposition to pur
chase. Wethers were quoted In the
Nebraska yards today at B to $5.31
for old and 5S6 to 17.75 for yearl
ing with ewes af $4.75 to 15.10 and
lambs af 16.25 to .
I,ocal prices were considerably un
der these, but nevertheless the Im
provement in the buying was marked.
Loral interests have come to realize
that unless they offer moro for sheep
the movement will be away worn In
stead of toward Portland.
Cattle Market Strongs.
r..i.i rattle was somewhat
stronger at North Portland today.
Quality of offerings was not very
cond and considering this tho prices
obtained were somewhat better than
recently obtained In the cattle divi
sion Three loads that came upon to
day's market were those recently sent
away from tho yards by Kldwell &
Caswell owing to the lack of demand
at suitable prices. The stock was fed
at the Pun Dial ranch at Troutdal .
at the Sun Dial ranch at Troutdale.
The stuff offering today in the cat
tle pens brought about 15c to Z5c
more than It would a week ago.
Only one load of hogs was avall--v.1-
h inml trade today. There
was a weaker tone In Chicago for
wine and values wore 5c to 10c low
er with tops ranging around $7.15.
while at South Omaha swine were
stronger with tops at $6.50. Ihls
means that It cost $7.60 to land sup
plies at Pacific northeast centers.
Many Ilrlnjr in Potatoes.
Outside potatoes are being offered
the local trade and some small ship
ments aro coming forward to Front
street. Another car has arrived from
there. Shipments are being offered
from Idaho and while none have been
purchased to date, the trade Is se
riously considering importations.
Idaho and Taklma stock Is showing
much larger slues than tho bulk of
tho present local offering and while
tho quality Is not as good as the best
local growth, there Is a certain trade
.hni r, refers the larger potato, notably
hotels and restaurants, nnd therefore
thev nre willing to pay a better price
for the best of these.
Best quality potatoes are selling as
hlirh n, 11.85 in a small way along
Front scrcet. At country shipping
points $1.50 Is being freely offered for
the best, and it Is reported, but not
confirmed, that $165 and $1 60 has
been offered and paid In a limited way
In the country.
Outside markets continue to show
an Indifferent tone, especially at Cal
Ifornla centers, where the ofrenngs
from th enat are competing for
trade.
Potato planting is extremely heavy
in eastern Multnomah and Clackamas.
Japanese growers are planting more
acreage than ever before.
Coarse Orains Still Soaring.
Coarse grain prices are still Jump
ing upward in the Pacific northwest
and new high records for this season's
movement are again showing.
Barley supplies ore so scarce that
buyers are anxiously bidding $25 to
$25.60 for No. 1 feed basis track de
livery Portland and nominally brew
ing is $1.60 a ton higher than this.
Demand for the latter cereal Is lim
ited locally because the wants of prac
tically all Paclflcnorthwest brewers
have been filled.
today's quotations on barley are
ftflly 60c a ton above previous quota
tions and buyers say It Is extremely
hard to secure even limited supplies
at the high figure.
A further advance of 50c a ton Is

offering in the oats trade here. No. 1
white Is quoted at $28 and $25.50, and
U strong at these prices. Holders
seem to be asking more money. The
advance In oats Is caused directly by
the strength and rise in the Darley
trude and therefore future quotations
In the former line depend upon how
tho latter acts.
Another cent has been added to the
premium offering for bluestem wheat
Supplies available In the open market

Mohair In Firm.
Market for mohair is firm at 32c a
pound here. Tho higher price is now
being offered by all interests.
Supplies of hair, are now coming
forward quite freely and the trade
fur the season has started In earnest
Practically all tho buying to date here
has been for the account of mills and
speculation is entirely lacking thus
far.
Goat shearing Is well under way
throughout tho Willamette valley.
Outside of tho Dallas pool, none of
the associations have thus far named
their date of acutlon.
Samples of eastern Oregon and east
ern Washington wools are being re
ceived by the local trade In an effort
t.i sell. The quality offered Is gen
erally superior to a year ago, oetng
extremely low prices for wool and
manufacturers' bids are not extensive.
American markets continue to show
much cleaner, although the hair is
not so long.

Neuralgia."
The piercing pains of Nr ralgia,
which often follows a bad old or
La Grippe, are frequently a!:v. t un
bearable and few medicines afford
anjr relief to the sufferer.
I am a rural mail earn r and
have been a user of the Dr. Miles
medicines for years.
Dr. Miles' Anti-Pain Pills
can't be beaten. They are the
only thing 1 have found that will
relieve my neuralgia and I have tried
most everything, besides medicine
from the doctor. I am willing to
tell anyone what the Anti-Pain
Pills did for me."
Charles Hilderbrandt,
Box 205 Woodvill. Ohio
If you, like Mr. Hilderbrandt,
"have tried most everything" in
vain, why not do as he did, fight
vour aches and pains with Dr.
Miles' Anti-Pain Pills. Let the

No matter how stubborn the con
test, they will come out victorious.
Dr. Miles' Anti-Pain Pills

The great scarcity of local make of
Gutter la fnrrlna? the trade nere 10
order additional supplies from out
Hide points. The east and California
are airaln being drawn upon for sup
lilies and In consequence the market
! showing much strength. Were It
not for the fact that It Is so close to
the flush season, prices would In all
probability be advanced by local ma
kers.
Notwithstanding tho great strength
of the creamery butter market here
nt this time, preaent quotations are
not as high as last year, views of the
trade to the contrary. An examina
tion of the actual sales of butter a
year ago shows that on tnls date best
creamery was quoted In prints at S6c
a pound, compared with the present
market for similar pack at 82 l-2c
Pr pound. Previous to this time, a
year ago, the differential was even
greater. While local prices have been
holding around 32 l-2c for prints re
cently, a year ago the market stood
at 40c during January, February
and about half of Marcn. During the
first part tf April, 1S10, creamery
prints of city make were quoted at
33c a pound or half a cent above the
present price of similar make.
Eastern butter Is coming forward
In cubes and Is cut up here, selling at
30 and 31c a pound, with an excellent
demand. Best California Is selling

Good brands of country creamery
are holding firm and for some of tnese
city prices are being offered.
