market for wheat here und nre pay
ing the Hirae quotations for Portland
delivery as for Puget sound. Other
buyers sny they have riot bid above
81c for club, although sales have
been confirmed here as high as 84c.
Even the lower figure is a cent above
what the same interests have been
offering.
On the basis of export shipment the
wheat market hero today Is far be
yond the business price. Export prlco
for club hero is about 77c track de
livery or 4c under the lowest figure
offered and 7c below the highest

The market for potatoes here Is
holding ruther firm with only a limit
ed busings piiHslng.
Dealers generally are offering $1.40
per cenfal at country shipping points
for good shipping stock, but as high
as Jl.nO continues to be offered for
selected stock. Only a few cars of the
latter remain unsold In this section.
Farmers generally are of the opin
ion that higher prices will prevail
for potatoes, and for that reason many
are again Inclined to hold hack. Just
what they expect to get for their
stock they are unwilling to say except
that more money wlil bo offered after
a while.
Notwithstanding this determination
to hold for an advance, lower prices
are niln ruling In the south. At
an Francisco Oregon potatoes are
down another nickel.
This Is due to the greater shipments
from other places recently. An effort
Is being made by some speculators to
check the movement from Oregon, so
a.i to make a better market for their
stock at San Francisco, In the for
mer they have succeeded, but the
work has as yet had no effect upon
the southern trade.
Demand for seed potatoes is again
showing an Increase here. Planting is
now general and plowing Is shown.

Storing Kirsjs.
Storago of eggs has become gen
eral all along the Pac'flc coast.
Receipts for the fresh egg market
are not ho liberal as the trade here is
holding firm at 20c a dozen for small
lots of candled goods.
Storage operators are generally of
fering 19c a dozen for supplies land
ed at Portland, and these do not en
ter the trade at all.
For a while it was believed that the
Htr cter government regulations would
have a tendency to stop the storage
of eggs to some extent, but after the
first scare the trade has settled down
to a normal basis. It has been pro
posed that the government prohibit
the holding in storage of eggs longer
than three months, but the trade in
general expects the measure to be
amended so that a year's time will be
allowed.
In California the governor recently
signed Senator Hure's bill that provid
ed that eggs or butter held In storage
more than three months shall be la
beled with the date they were put in
storage when exposed for sale. This
measure is expected to stop the sell
ing of storage eggs as fresh stock by
commission men or retailers.
Livestock at Standstill.
The market for livestock was at a
standstill this morning on account of
exhibits at the yards, but late trad
ing shows definite direction of values.
Receipts for the day were nominal.
but this was a point in favor of bet
ter values.
Hogs took a turn for the better all
through the east today, advancing at
all centers. There was an advance
of 10c at South Omaha, which put
the top price there to $6.65 or $8.76
to land here, while Chicago was gen
erally 10 above yesterday, with the
run not so liberal.
Locally the hog market seems in
clined to drop to the basis of what
stuff can be landed here from the
enst, and latest sales have been made
but a fraction above the cost of Oma
ha Fupplles.
Market for sheep is firm at the ad
vance quoted exclusively by The Jour
nal yesterday. Only a nominal num
ber of sheep came forward to the
market today.

Mexican Railway Officials Putting

That Mexico Is making every effort
to keep its lines of railway open in
spite of tlie activity of the Insurgents'
is evidenced by the heavy purchases
of ties and bridge material which
hove 'been made in Houston within
tho past few days. Henry Mel, pur
chasing agent of the National Rail
roads of Mexico, has had his head
quarters there for two weeks or more
and has been rushing railroad build
ing material and supplies of all kinds
across tho Rio Qrando.
Much of the activity relative to tho
handling of the big body of troops
rushed to Texas by tho United States
centered Ml Houston as nil of the. sol
diers ordered to Galveston were com
pelled to pass through this city as
were also the majority of the forces
from the South Atlantic states order
ed to Fort Sain Houston. In tho event
of a threatened move ngatnst any ele
ment In the Republic ncross tho bor
der, Houston would become one of
the strong strategic points as it is the
terminus of tho St. Louis, Brownsville
and Mexico line which connects di
lectly at Matamores with the Mexican
National and is also tho largest city
with water and rail connections which
links the International and Great Nor
thern railway directly with the bor
der. Newspaper correspondents and tele
graph operators were the first to ar
rive In this city In advance of the
troops. Then came the soldiers from
Pensacola, Mobile and Georgia. Ow
ing to the sudden movements of troops
into this state, the commissary force
of the department of Texas was hard
pressed to meet the demands made
upon it and Houston wholesalers were
called upon to supply large quantities
of supplies which were rushed to Fort
Sam Houston and Fort Crockett.

Notice Is hereby given that the
Common Council of the City of Pen
dleton will receive bids for the con
struction of a steel bridge across the
Umatilla river on Main Street, in the
City of Pendleton, Umatilla Cpunty,
Oregon, at the City Recorders office
in the City of Pendleton, until March
29th, 1911, at 6 o'clock P. M. Said
Bridge to be of the material, and con
structed in accordance with the tenta
tive Plans and Specifications therefor
prepared by and now on file in the
office of the City Surveyor of the City
of Pendleton. Each bidder to furnish
his own plans, and each bid must be
accompanied by a Certified Check in
the sum of 6 per cent of the amount
of the bid. Payable to the order
of the Mayor of the City Of Pendleton.
Such bridge to be placed in such po
sition across the Umatilla river as di
rected by the Common Council. The
Common Council reserves the right to
reject any and all bids.
