the rice and cotton fields of Louisiana and Texas, the vast

20 CENTS FANCY AltR MOKE
Egg Market Also Steady Cornrea
Beef Arrives From NebruHka
SliortaKO Ui Barley Supply.
(Friday's Journal.) .
Chicken market has reached an en
tirely new high mark today. Sales of
ordinary coops were made as high as
20c. while those that had straight
coops of selected hens were able to
squeeze a fraction more than this.
Receipts of chickens continue ratn-
er limited, while for some reason or
other the consumptive call Is much
better than usual. While the big re
tailers are making every effort to beat
down the price by handling eastern
storage goodB they are not able to
do It so easily as a few seasons ago,
because of the public dislike for Ice
house stock.
Some fancy dressed chickens sold
up to 23c a pound along tno sireei
durinz the oast 24 hours, but this Is
an extreme figure and was obtained
as stated, only for first class birds.
The regular price would be about a
cent below this.
The lack of demand for turkeys Is
a surprise to the trade and live hens
nr toriav brinclnir as much, If not
more, than the former. This 1b a
most unusual occurrence and Indi
cates two things the extraordinary
call for chickens and the lack of de
mand for turkeys.
Eirirs Are Slowly.
Eggs are Steady along Front street
and strictly fresh candled stock Is be-
inir auoted generally at 21c a dozen,
although a few Bales continue to be
made at 20c.
The recent advance In the east and
th fart that stocks here were not
nearlv o heaw as the trade had be
llv,l has led to the stiffening of
prices.
It seemed that the trade here was
far more scared tban hurt by the
eastern Importations, and therefore
as soon as It recovered from the
fright the market assumed Its normal
standing. v
While In some quarters It Is assert
ed that there Is less demand for eggs
RinpB the Drlce of smelt went so low,
still -the trade In general Is Inclined
to the view that since the retail price
was forced down to J25c the whole'
sain demand was better.
The price of eggs today is still
above the basis of a year ago. At that
time there was a severe decline
which caused the market to reach the
bottom at 17c and 17 l-2c a dozen
but so heavy was the demand that the
price instantly advanced and f
went to 22 and 23c again.
fni-fl Bocf.
The first carload of beef cattle that
ever came to this market from Ne
hraska arrived in from Wood River
this morning. The shipment was to
th Honson Commission company, and
th uIk made to' the Union Meat
company.
The carlot was brought througn
simr.lv as an experiment and consist
ed of 21 head of steers that averaged
hore about 1225 pounds. The shrink-
nep from the east was unusually
great and this Is said to be the only
hnr ncainsi creator importations.
The Nebraska cattle were corn fed
and well finished and are said to be
nf oTtremelv eood quality. While the
exact cost of bringing the -hipmen
through is not known, purchasers be
lleve it will be $7, or perhaps
fraction more. The shipment will be
hei,i nn,l fed for several days and
thi-ri killed.
Acc-ordine to those who brought
,,ror,i the shipment from Wood
River the arrivals are somewhat In
the nature of an experiment, and
will be used to show local Interests
what real fancy fed t cattle are.
onlv One IxnuI Hogs Available.
While onlv one load of hogs was
offering In the entire livestock mar
ket at North Portland today, mi
brought SS.TH. or the full prices of
last week. The decline of yesterday
I therefore fully recovered.
The rest of the arrivals in the hog
market were contracted in Nebraska
hv a local packing company and
therefore did not . enter the trade at
all.
While no sheep arrived today, somo
that nnm forward yesterday were
disposed of. Lambs sold up to $5.6
or about 15c less than previous
shipments of like quality.
Henllne & Ohllnger orougnt nr

ka ns well as a. io.iu ui .-u..i"..
Ball & Anderson had a load of nf6
In the market from Hansen, luuuu.
It was sold to a northern packer.
Interior Interests are buying bacK
some of the barley they sold to the
coast early in the season and are pay
ing a good premium In oraer to get
it. A snle of a big lot was made at
Walla Walla recently by a Portland
house at $23 a ton for feed barley or
fully $3 a ton better than was obtain
able a few months ago. In fact bar-
Is so scarco today at interior
points that' the same price Is ruling
there for feed as for brewing, ims
Is an unusual occurrence.
The great shortage in barley ouer-
ings In the Interior is sure io uvo
ome effect upon the traue ipro uui
it. is not likely that Portland or other
tidewater points will bo forced very
high unless there Is a change In Cal
ifornia. If tho interior snows loo
much of a shortage, or sufficient to
stop shipments In this direction, It
would cnuse Importations again from
tli,. south.
While some buyers say they are still
able to purchase No. 1 white oats at
$27 a ton, others are freely offering
$27.50 and are taking all they can
get nt that figure. This Is an advance
of about $50o over what these same
interests were offering a short time

Dlapepsln in the bouse handy?
This harmless blessing will digest
anything you can eat without the
slightest discomfort, and overcome a
sour, gassy stomach five minutes af

the formula, plainly prlnfed on these
50-cent cases of Pape's Diapepsin,
then you will readily see why It
makes Indigestion, sour rftomach,
heartburn and other distress go In
five minutes, and relieves at once
such miseries as belching of gas,
eructations of sour, undigested rood,
nausea, headaches, dizziness, consti
pation and other stomach disorders.
Some folks have tried so long to
find relief from Indigestion and dys
pepsia or an out of order stomach
with the common, every-day cures ad
vertised that they have about made
up their minds that they have some
thing else wrong, or believe theirs is
a case of nervousness, gastritis, catar
rh of the stomach or cancer.
This, no doubt, is a serious mis
take. Your real trouble is what you
eat does not digest; instead, it fer
ments and sours, turns to acid, gas
and stomach poison, which putrefy In
the digestive tract and Intestines, and
besides, poison the .breath with nau
seous odors.
A hearty appetite, with thorough

discomfort or misery of the stomach
