IVH BIRDS SELL FOR TWENTY CUNTS POUND Souivily of Supply Combined With Iiicri'UMHl Consumption Causes the Buyer to Hid Up. (Wednesday's Journal.) With live chickens selling as high as 20c a pound In the Front street muikot, today's values ure within a notch of the highest price ever re corded here. There has been a Bcarclty of offer ings In the chicken market recently. ml this, together with the greater consumptive dcm.ind, hug caused the trude to bid higher In order to get Its ormal supply. Whllo thickens aro roosting un usually high, there Is stagnation fn ho turkey trade. Some supplies that cached the street nearly a week ago ru still being carried over, owing to tho lack of demand. Prices have been toadily reduced by sellers, but even this has fulled to attract the atten tion of buyers. Live turkeys are now low and not easily moved at 20 enta a pound, whllo dressed stock In but a couple of cents above this. There Is only a limited call lor ucks and geese, and in this line rices continue nominal, with no gen- ral change In the situation thus fur tho present week. Shcvp Murkot Drops. Some extra fine lambs sold in the North Portland yards late today at 5.85 or 15c lower than the same lass of stuff would have brought a few days ugo. The market for sheep ml lambs is weaker and poor quality i hard to sell even at materially re uecd prices. Additional strength Is showing In the cattle market and latest sales are fraction above what the same sort f stuff would have brought a day or so ago. While there was a big run of cat- le in the yards today, as well as a heavy showing of sheep and lambs; most of tho arrivals In the former irie were for through shipment and d not enter the trade here at all. Tho shlpmnnt that went to the north consisted of 15 cars and came from California. Four louds of cattle came forward from Montana this morning. Three nds sold at $6.35 and one load at 6.10. They were not weighed up un til a late hour. No hogs arrived In the yards today, and quotations In that line are nom- nally the same as last Saturday, when the last shipment came forward. Shippers are flooding the sheep market with supplies and for that reason most sales are made rather Ewes sold around $4, while some feed lambs went at S4.60). Holiday Observed. Washington's birthday was cele brated in the Chicago and other Am- rlcan grain exchanges and while Liverpool was open, the local trade ook a holiday and conditions remain much the same as noted yesterday. There is growing weakness In the wheat and flour situation. Some of the smaller millers are again cutting patents from 10 to 15c a barrel but the lists are being maintained by all of the larger mills so far as patent Is concerned. While there Is talk that some or the millers on the sound have been offering export to the orient at $3.50 the reports are not given any cred ence by the local trade. The orient recently made an attempt to purchase export here at $3.60 from a large miller but the offer was rejecicu. jn the other hand flour brokers state Unit they have been offered and sold flour low enough to dispose oi export down to 13.40 but the volume oi business at this basis Is considered too nominal to base any quotations thereon. itiiv market Is very weak. ac ...-.! m hnvcrs everyone in mo country Is seemingly anxious to dls , nf sum es at lower prices. rwa and bar ev trauo nominal niiu unchanged today. Two laws, placing re- trlctlnns upon it, were passed, a third, even more severe, weni inriiuu tho house easily, but eastern Oregon men In the senate contrived to Kin because of the effect It would have upon their section of the state. Tho most Important or tne new laws which relates to tho liquor question Is contained In a bill presonte'd by Senator Dlmii k of Oregon City. It pro hibits the consumption of liquor In uny railroad depot, bans tho use of liquor on trains, except in ine uuimt. oars, anil manes any imwu-ui jjc. son entering a train subject to a pen alty. This bill, unless vetoed, win proo- ahlv huve a far reaching erroct ana perhaps more so than tho author haa In mind. In Portland, for instance, It compels the saloon now located In tho Oregon Electric railway depot at tho foot of Jefferson street to go out of business. There are said to be aitniinr situations In other parts of tho state which would bo affected. The second bill passed by both houses was one Introduced by nepre sentatlve Gill of Wasco county. It reads in part us follows: "No person shall bo permitted to sell spirituous, vinous or malt liquors or' formented cider, commonly known an hard cider, or near beer. In this RETURN HOME THROUGH The Sunny South When You Arrange Your Eastern Trip Be Sure to Include the Sunset Route Through NEW ORLEANS, EL PASO LOS ANGELES and SAN FRANCISCO for return. It is a splendid educational journey, and at this time of the year especially delightful because so warm and comfort able, - Every Mile is through the Sunny Southland the rice and cotton fields of Louisiana and Texas, the vast mirage moees of New Mexico and Arizona, now spread with bright green, the orange groves and 6erai-tropic charm of Cal ifornia, miles and miles along the ocean ehore, and Beveral of the most interesting cities on the continent Ask your Local Railroad Agent all about it I .state, without having first obtained a license from the county court of the proper county for that purpose and In no place where any college or uni versity is now or shall hereafter be located, for a distance of one mile or more from thereto, where such sales are now being made under such li censes. No license shall be granted for Buch sales within a distance of one mile from any college or univer sity." The provisions of this act, however, do not apply to any city or town now Incorporated. The bill defeated by the eastern Oregon senators was presented by Judge Derby of Hood River. It pre vented Incorporation of towns having a population of less than E00. The fact that under the present law any group of persons may Incorporate and sell liquor In a "dry" county, no mat ter how far they may be, has been tho cause of much complaint and It was proposed to remedy this situa tion. Towns of 500 are not very num erous in eastern Oregon, however, and the delegation from that district claims It would work a hardship up on them and they obtained the defeat of the bill In the senate.
