Good quality steers aro in demand
In tho Portland market at this time
and of this quality there are not
enough supplies offering Killers

and poor stuff in fact too many of
these, are already held by packers for
the good of the market, but nono
would bo able to resist a shipment of
superior quality.
Outside of the one carload of cattle
and hogs shipped by J. S. Milne from
The Dalles, there were no arrivals In
tho North Portland market today.
Latest sales of cattle clearly con
firm the early reports given out by
The Journal yesterday but as has
been stated previously this applies
more to ordinary and poor quality
than to real good stuff.
The cattle market is In a position
where much harm could bo done tho
price by too liberal offering. So far
as known no big movement Is now
enroute to this market from outside
sections and It Is not likely that any
big run will suddenly show up from
the homo territory. The home sec
tion has not been a free offerer of
cattle during recent weeks and this
Is why killers and their representa
tives went to extreme points to bring
In supplies; thereby holding In check
a spirited advance that would have
been forced by reason of small sup
plies here.
Market for hogs reflects weakness.
Latest sales In the North Portland
yards were at a decline of IS cents
from the previous high points and
for the present market (8.50 seems
to be the extreme top even for light
stuff. It is the lighter swine that
tops the market here and elsewhere
at this time.
Heavy hogs are much In the ma
jority and theito are finding little fa
vor from any lntcri:s even down to
38. Packers still Incline to the opin
ion that they will get cheaper hogs
around March and therefore are op
erating on a small way except tor
block stock.
Sheep market Is still slow with sales
generally around the former range.

Weaker feeling In the oats market
Is showing on account of the more lib
eral offerings by producers. No. 1
white oats are being generally quoted
50c a ton lower with the extreme
quotation to producers' at $28 a ton
hut with most dealers unwilling to of
fer more than $27.60. aray oats are
quoted about 60c a ton under this.
Wheat market Is steady again with
club at 79 80c and blucstem showing
a range from 82 to 84c a bushel ba
sis track delivery. Exporters are
again In the market for supplies but
their wants are limited.
There was further weakness In for
eign wheat markets today with lower
prices generally in effect.
Barley trade remains quiet.
Flour Is generally quiet for both
domestic and export account.
EGG MARKET IS STEADY.
Sales Doing Made from 29 to 2V l-3c;
California Prices Higher.
Market for eggs s steady again
along Front street and supplies are
generally cleaning up at 29 29 1-2
c a dozen. There are higher quota
tions In California, making Importa
tions of fresh stock impossible at the
moment. Best eggs are quoted today
in San Francisco at 33 l-2c a dozen.

Front street Is usually a poor place
to sell dressed beef owing to the In
adequate facilities and tho Infrequent
arrivals, but at this ttme a good tone
Is showing. This Is due to the high
values packers are asking. All sorts
nro now In demand. There remains
a weak tone on hogs but veal Is steady
again.
