Minneapolis May, J 1.07 1-4.
St. Louis May, 99 l-4o.
Kansas City May," 95 7-8c.
Exporters were offering an advance
of about l-2c a bushel for both blue
stem and club wheat today. They
were quoting club on the basis of 8)c
track Portland and bluestem from
83c to 84c a bushel.
Some buying continues on this
basis at interior points, but the move
ment has been rather restricted since
the holidays.
There was a weaker feeling at Liver"
pool today in spite of the sharp ad
vance at Chicago yesterday. Although
the opening of the foreign market was
a fraction better owing to the greater
strength shown by Argentina and
Australian offerings. However, less
continual demand caused the late de
cline.
Today's prices in the wheat and
flour market show an Interesting com
parison with a year ago. Ciub wheat
was selling then around $1.11 a bushel
or 30c more than today, while blue
stem was S7c higher. Flour was
quoted at $6.35 for patents as com
pared with J5.15 today, while export
brands went at 14.60 compared with
13.60 today.
CHICAGO WHEAT DEPRESSED.
Scilenibcr Only One to Show Any
Strength ami Even It U Down.
Chicago. Jan. 4. Wheat market
was depressed and sluggish today,
closing with a loss of l-2c to 6-8c after
opening 3-8c lower to l-2c higher.
September was the only option to
show even a sight of strength during
the day, having started l-8e higher
and made a further gain of a fraction
before bearlHh sentiment overwhelmed
the bulls.
Potato Growers Soiling.
Potato growers of Oregon are not
no firm In their views and some are
letting go.
The fact that outside markets were
rot nearly as strong as some of them
had believed, has led to the change
of opinion. In the vicinity of Newberg
quite a number of lots have been of
fered. It Is stated that the growers
there have held a meeting and decid
ed to accept $1 for their best stock
f. 0. b. at this time rather than hold
for higher prices later.
There Is only a small amount of
stock going to the south at this time.
Best Oregons are quoted In San Fran
cisco from 11.60 to $160 per cental.
This would mean $1.25811.36 here ex
clusive of commission and other sel
ling charges at San Francisco. At
country shipping points the limits
would be less because at this end of
the line there Is a further expense of
about 6c a sack for hauJIIng besides
the freight to this city from some
points.
EjfK" Aro Weaker.
Further weakness was shown by the
local egg market today and many
more dealers were offering at 36 36c

That many more cattle men are go
ing out of business In the Pacific
northwest, and especially In Idaho,
than are entering the trade, Is the
opinion of I. D. Bodlne, connected
with the Sharkey Commission com
pany at the Btockyards, who has just
returned from a business trip through
the Gem state. "Dry farming is les
sening the livestock Interests there,"
says Mr. Bodlne, "and much of the
sage brush land formerly used for
cattle Is now being cut up for farms.
e Now for tie first time you get a complete set of all Mark Twain's writ
ings at just exactly one-half the price they have ever been sold before. This
is a new edition, just as complete as the old one, which still sells, by the
way, at $50.00. This new edition is only $25.00 for the 25 volumes.
It had been Mark Twain's ambition to have his books In every
American home, and he made a great personal sacrifice to
bring about this remarkable opportunity -for the first time
In the history of publishing, copyrighted books are sold at the
price of non-copyrighted books-the chance will not come again.
But for Mark Twain's action this would have been impossible. Never
before has a copyrighted library set of a standard author's works been
issued at such a low figure.
Brander Matthews says : Mark Twain will be included In that group

TKXANS AKE ANGRY
AT WALL STREET
The pride of Texas has been touch
ed by certain developments In Wall
street during the past year, and It Is
the intention of several prominent
legislators to "get back" during the
session now beginning. Prominent
business men of the state declare that
a spirit of boycott has been noticed
In Wall street against Texas securi
ties, loans and Investments, because
of the displeasure It feels regarding
certain phases of the Texas insurance
laws. The people are thinking of re
taliating by exempting Texan coun
ty and city bonds from taxation so
that home money may buy the bonds,
because the money drawn as interest
would be net profit If the legislature
finds that It has not the authority to
enact such a statute, a constlutlonal
amendment will probably be submit
ted to the people for their ratification.
The state would be losing nothing by
exempting these bonds, as no revenue
is now being obtained from that source
because of the bonds being disposed
of beyond the state's limits. Good
business policy would prompt the sug
gested change, as all the Interest
money now being sent away from Tex
as would be retained at home and
spent among the home citizenship, to
the material advancement of the
state's Internal interests.
