Calves at Highest Irlee.
Carstcn Packing company of
coma paid J8.25 for calves today In
the North Portland yards, thereby
breaking all previous high records
here. The animals averaged about
220 pounds and were shipped by M.
E. Ilnlsklss from Idaho Falls. Idaho.
"They were the best calves I have
ever seen In the market." says Wil
liam Burke, Jr., who closed the deal.
All PrhvM llulllsli.
Livestock prices were extremely
bullish here today and prices are gen
erally higher, with tin. exception of
hogs, which are a nickel lower. For
one lot of lions $S.i5 was paid today,
as compared with the recent high
mark of $9. This Is an exceptional
value, In face of the recent decline In
the east nnd central west.
Lower prices prevailed for hogs at
Chicago, where prices closed 15c
lower today. At Omaha hog values
were down 10e to Ku with prices be
tween $7.60 and $7.70. This would
make the landing price here for Ne
braHka hogs $8.90, or a nickel under
the price received at North Portland
this morning.
Cattle market was far more bull
Ish than ever before In this territory.
Only n small supply was visible and
this was picked up generally at an
advance of about L'lic over last quo
tatlon, or about 75c above those In
effect two weeks ago. Cows that av
eraged 912 pounds went at $5.10, al
though one animal of excellent qual
lty that weighed 1060 pounds went to
the new high record at $5.75 A bull
sidd yesterday at $3.75 that could
have been duplicated a few weeks ago
ut $2.50, and four steers that aver
aged 902 pounds went at $5.35, an
unheard of figure heretofore for this
class of offerings.
Puckers I"ircil to Elevate Hands.
Prices that ruled In the stockyards
today were almost prohibitive and
marked this city as the highest mark
et for livestock generally in the en
tire country. A Puget sound packer,
who has been known heretofore as
one of the biggest feeders, came Into
the local market today and paid what
ever the holders were willing to sell
at.
Such action signifies that packers
retain smaller herds of livestock on
feed than generally anticipated. While,
at the start of the season they held
mor.' cattle than ever before, they
have used up most of their holdings
and are now forced upon the mercy
of shippers.
Tin- outlook for extreme high cat
tle prices can therefore he called the
brightest in the history of the trade.
Shec prlii" Are ltxs(e.
There was only one lot of sheep
offering in tile Portland market to
day nnd this brought fully 25c above
the extreme value of a few days ago.
The sale consisted of 2,S mixed sheep,
averaging 1'lT pounds These went

Wheat market was firmer lorally,
hut pending the New Year there was
no change In quotations. liusiness
remains quiet, with no activity on the
part of exporters to promote sales,
although most hf them say they are
willing to pay 79c to 80c a bushel,
track Portland. Tor quite a bunch of
w heat at this time. ,
There was a sharp advance In Liv
erpool futures today, owing to the
1 damage news from Argentina and
from continental Europe. While there
l.i a steadier tone In cargoes, there Is
practically no change In quotations,
and ctuh is nominally placed at 35.6
nnd fortyrold at 35.9.
Private advices from I'.iienos Ayres
state that very little wheat Is being
offered as yet. and Indications point
to considerable holding by producers
there.
Coarse grain values are generally
held Intact, with only a nominal am
ount of business passing over the boll,
days. There is no sign of a resump
tion of eastern buying of brewing
hurley here, but interior growers are
holding out for higher prices on this
hope.
Sales of good birds are being gen
erally made around 30c a pound,
while occasional transactions In extra
select are shown from that figure up
to 32c, although the extreme mark
was received only for a limited num
ber. Live turkeys have sold as high as
25c a pound and this, too. Is a new
h(gh record here.
The shortage of turkeys is the
greatest ever noted In this market.
Cold storage operators are getting
their birds out, but there Is only a
limited call for them, even though
freshly killed stock cannot be obtain
ed at any figure. The recent death
In this city of a mother and child,
after eating cold storagp turkey, has
practically cut out all the demand
for Ice house stock.
Along with the strength In the tur
key market all poultry is quoted firm
and clhckens are generally a cent
higher.
.lap Orange Aro Condemned.
A big lot of Japanese oranges was
recently condemned by the Brltlsn
Columbia authorities at Vancouver on
account of the presence of consider
able scale. It Is stated that some of
this fruit has reached the Portland
market nnd Is being offered for sale.
The state board of horticulture Is In
vestigating the matter.
Egg Continue Wenk.
Trade In the egg market here con
tinues weak. While once in a wnne
a sale is reported a fraction above
28c, the bulk of the goods remains
nnmiil ni that figure, and further
shading Is expected.

the International Lead & Iron com
pany, that samples from deposits on
the Pend Orevllle river north of the
international boundary average 62 per
cent metallic ore, one half of 1 per
cent sulphur and 14-100 of 1 per cent
phosphorus. They regard it as one
of the largest and highest grade bod
ies of hematite ore yet discovered in
the Pacific Northwest. H. H. Shal
linbcrger. secretary nnd manager of
the company, which Is controlled by
business men of Spokane, announces
that plans will be prepared for a pig
iron plant of at least 600 tons daily
capacity, lie says there Is an abund
ance of lime and coke available at
reasonable prices, also that water pow
er can be developed nt a low cost. The
vein on the property has been opened
by a crosscut, where at a depth of 75
feet there is 65 feet of hematite ore,
averaging more than 60 per cent iron.
Other properties in the district have
produced ore averaging 50 per cent
Iron, but carrying a high percentage
of sulphur.
