In these holes, eyeless fish are

companies are engaged in getting out

Evidence of the existence of coal, pe

prospecting has been done. There is
evidence that copper has been mined
in large quantities. The water of the

amount of sulphate of copper It con

as high as 6 per cent of copper in so

deposited on the margin of the stream.

The ancient ruins of cities through

positive indications of the existence I

Judging from present Indications, the!
least 60,000 people. There Is not even 1
a trace to be found of a civilized be
ng anywhere within 100 miles from
there.
Xo donbt can exist that this region
was very thickly populated at some
time, that Its inhabitants were high
ly civilized, as s proven by their ar
chitecture, and that the country must
have produced something not known
at the present time. The destruc
tion and abandonment visible at every
hand was doubtless due to the inter
necino wars among the natives them
selves. A noteworthy instance of the
intelligence and civilization of the
people at some time remote is clearly
demonstrated by an artificial water
way constructed by . them.
Present harbor conditions are not
favorable to the intending settler in
this region. The native Is not to be
counted on, and all labor must be
brought from other yars. The Maya
Indian will not work. He may pos
sibly plant a small patch of corn and
this, with his fishing, will keep him
content. Should he develop a taste
for meat, he finds game In the woods.
(MIS HAY CITIES TO
WOKIv I'OU CAKUXE
Marsh field, dr., Pec. 21 -The
granting of street railway franchises
in the Coos Hay cities Is a matter
which is now attracting much a'ten
tion on the part of the people and
some decisive steps are being taken.
Over a year ago a franchise was
granted to J. M. filake for building
anr maintaining an electric railway In
.T-'nfield. Work was to be started
. t a ci r'aln time and six months ago
.'r. Blake Appeared before the coun
il and asked that he be given more
toiie. He was under the new r
r.Titrement, to have a mile of road
built by the first of January and re
cently he again asked for an exten
sion of six months in which to begin
work and It was granted by the coun
cil. At the recent city election In North
Bend Mr. Iilake asked for a fran
chise and It was voted upon by the
people. The franchise was turned down
the franchise has been refased Mr.
Hlake In North P.end there has been
a movement started to have the
Marshfield people vote on the matter
of recalling the extension in this city.
If this were done, the franchise In
both Marshfield and North Rend
would be left open for any good road
that wanted to build. Mayor L.. J.
Simpson of North Uend has suggest
ed that both cities grant like fran
chises for a railway and put these
franchises in the hands of trustees
who are to turn them over to the first
railroad that will build to Coos Hay.
It Is suggested that this would leave
the franchises open and ready for
any road that wants to come here.
This plan is being agitated and it Is
likely some such step will be taken.
