BATTLE SHORTAGE
VERY PRONOUNCED
CATTLE INTERESTS ARE
LOOKING FOR RAISE
Two-year-olds Bring Go)d Prices In
North Portland Yards Good De
mand in All Other Lines of Live
stock. Portland, Ore., Deo. 19. Competi
tion for cattle la sending prices sky
high at country points and besides
this the scarcity Is the most pronounc
ed ever shown.
This Is the news brought to Port
land today by Prank W. Burke, who
came through from Utah with 10
loads of cattle from Kldwell & Cas
well, which were put on the market
this morning.
"On account of the very poor range
In Utah this summer a lot of half fat
cattle was sent to Omaha early this
fall," said Mr. Burke to the Journal
this morning. "Cattle are now very
scarce In that part of the country and
are extremely difficult to get. San
Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver and
Omaha interests are there bidding
agnlrmt us for the supplies and nat
urally this Is having a stiffening ef
fect upon prices.
"Cattle Interests at Interior points
are looking for higher prices owing
to he small suddIv now on feed and
the great demand. While the quality
of the cattle on feed will be very
good this season, the number avail
able for market is extremely small."
Good Prices for Two Year Olda.
Very good prices were realized In
the North Portland 'yards today for
. 2 year old cattle. Those Brought for
ward by Frank Burke for Kldwell &
Caswell were of this character, and
. as high as $6 90 was secured for
. steers that averaged less than 1100
, pounds. Cows that ranged under
1000 pounds went at 34. SO. a very un-
iiHiial figure for light stuff.
Other sales of steers were made as
jhieh as St. E0. This was for 1372
pound stuff, and only seven head went
this morning at the high figure. Three
-cows that averaged 1240 pounds went
- at $5.50 during the morning.
There was a good demand In other
. linos of livestock and one bull that
weighed 950 pounds went at 14, while
. lambs sold as-high as 17 for 12 head
that averaged 107 pounds. The sheep
market In general was firmer, and
. mixed stuff sold about a dime higher
than formerly.
lloga were quoted steady In the

Stephen Walt of Lansing, Michi
gan, writes:
For over three years I suffered
much pain and annoyance from stom
ach disease. I had no help from my
digestive organs apparently, and my
food would stay In my stomach and
ferment, causing gas; there was also
a dizzy headache. I doctored and
used every remedy that I heard of,
but It remained for MI-O-NA to care
me entirely. Before I had used three
boxes, my appetite and digestive or
Bans became all right. It Is a won

TALES ABOUT PEOPLE
New York. May Riley Smith, the
poetess, does not consider Imitation the
sincerest form of flattery. Whatever
credit Is due for her literary produc
tions she wants for herself. In fact
she despises plagiarism, especially
when she Is cast for the role of vic
tim. Some time ago a convict in a Min
nesota prison wrote verses of such
merit that he was given a pardon.
Immediately all the bright lights of
other "stirs" throughout the land got
wise to the "hunch" and began to woo
the muse. Several inmates of the
Kansas state penitentiary at Lansing
were among the number, and some of
their effusions were published.
May Riley Smith ran across these
convict-made verses, and, aha! she at
once recognized one poem, entitled
"Children," as a garbled imitation of
her own widely-copied "Tired. Moth
era." She at once wrote to the Kan
sas prison authorities, and the chanc
es for that enterprising convict to get
off with less than a full term have be
come mighty slight.
In the face of the criticism of the
clergy of the entire country, Thom
as A. Edison remains undisturbed ana
firm in his opinion that immortality
Is but a vain dream which will never
be realized. He recently declared that
If there is a heaven, he will probably
have a much better chance of getting
In than some of the pastors, and that
without the use of any electrical in
ventions. When asked whether he
expected to replace the angelic choir
with phonographs, he declined to ex
press an opinion, saying that he had
many problems to consider dealing
with more material things.
A sprained ankle will usually dis

remarkable preparations In use. Sold
