The' Rhodes scholarships are the result of a bequest made by Cecil Rhodes, the great English and South African financier, Just before his death, his idea being to promote the peace of the world by a better un derstanding and sympathy between nations through education. Two scholars are sent to Oxford University, England, from each of the states ev ery three years. The scholarships each are worth $1500 a year, and car. ry for three years. Out of this amount It seems that a scholar should be able to save something, but Brit ish customs which must be adhered to demand a certain expenditure for things which can not be evaded, even though they are obnoxious to Ameri can principles. For Instance, each scholar who takes up residence at Oxford must conform to the custom of having an Individual servant, call ed a "fag" who also does the work of a valet. A scholar, from all his ex penses, can manage to save Just about enough for a trip on the continent each year. Oregon has two scholars In resi dence now at Oxford, both from the University of Oregon: Wistar John son, who is in his last year, and Ce cil Lyans, in his first year. In the past there has been a scar city of applicants for scholarships from Oregon, never more than a half dozen candidates presenting them selves for examination. From pres ent indications, the number will not exceed five this year. Any person who desires to qualify should notify soon the president of the university.
