land, Ore., Oct. 6. Extra select steers
sold at an advance of 40c In the
stockyards this afternoon, 25 head
being disposed of at $5.90. The ani
mals that brought this figure averaged
1340 per head.
Hogs dropped another nlckle and no
ales were made above $10.
While local hog values have drop
ped to the basis of South Omaha pri
ces, the cattle market here continues
to draw under the values In effect at
Nebraska points, even after deduct
ing the shipping to the yards there.
For Instance, the best price available
here for cattle Is practically $5.25.
while at South Omaha sales were
made today as high as $7.50. On the
basis of prices there, this ' market
should be at least $1 higher than at
present.
Local Interests make the assertion
that our cattle are not as good as
hipped to the Omaha market, but at
the recent displays here It was shown
that no better cattle are produced In
the entire country.
The sheep market here, too. Is far
out of line with what shippers are
jetting at South Omaha and It Is
kn"wn positively that Oregon and
Washington sheep as well as those of
Idaho are among the host In the en
tire country- At South Omaha today
wethers were quoted top at $8.25
which would mean practically $5?
6.10 here were the local market to be
as good as trade Is elsewhere In sheep
at this time.
Says Stork Not So Good.
In an Interview an- official of the
Portland stockyards said that the
class of cattle that sell at the high
price listeil nt Omaha and Chicago
are entirely out of I.ne with cattle
here "There Is no. comparison that
can be made between the two grades,"
he states. "One I arnss fed and the
other Is corn fed. We do not get
that cbss of stuff in this market at
all and therefore comparisons are not
In line with actual facts. The mar
ket nt Portland pays more for grass
cattle than Chiengo."
No reply was made to the charges
that sheep and lambs sell higher in
proportion nt Omaha than they do
here.
"If packers here bought the high
priced stuff they do In the east It
would mean that the price on the
dressed stuff must, be materially ad

Little Dmngr In Livestock.
While there wns a fair run of cat
tle today, there was only a nominal
showing of either sheep or hogs. Both
of the latter lines show less than a
carload each today.
Trade In cattle started slowly and
there was practically nothing to re
port up to the noon hour.
E. J. Brown was in from Baker City
with five loads of cattle. ,
J. H. Pblrman had a mixed load of
cattle and hogs on today's market.
William Wachter brought forward
two loads of cattle from Klamath
Falls.
J. C. Davis shipped a mixed load of
sheep and hogs from Shedd.

Chicago, Oct. 6. Wheat market was
not so active today and after a gen
erally weak opening the market clos
ed l-2c to 3-4o a bushel lower than
yesterday. The report of Snow, the
crop expert, Indicated a crop of 448.-
000.000 bushels of winter wheat and
26,000.000 bushels of spring wheat In
the United States. The winter wheat
estimate Is smaller than that given by
the government September 1, which
Indicated a yield of 468, 294.000
bushels. .
Argentina news was of doubtful
character but the trade Is payiag close
attention to everything that comes
from there. A report via of Montreal
says there are Indications of dry
weather but nothing serious. No de
terioration Is reported as yet.
Foreign markets were generally
higher. Liverpool opened 8-8 to 3-4d
hlnher and closed with an advance of
3-4 to 7-8d. Antwerp closed 6-8c up
and Berlin l-2c.

represented the Oregon Agricultural

In response to the call gent out by
Manager Fllklngton for volunteers to
defeat the youngsters who will repre
sent the Orange this year. This Is
the largest number of graduates and
greatest proportion of stars that has
ever come back for the annual alumni
game and the number may increase to
twenty or more before the end of the
week. There has been a very general
response to the call for men with the
result that an all-star team of excep
tional strength will represent the
alumni In their annual contest.
Among the men who will play on
Saturday are Sam Dolan, the famous
O. A. C. and Notre Dame star and
Bert PHklngton and Dow Walker, who
have been playing on the Multnomah

tal in this city. Moore had been in
the institution as a patient for a week
or more and after his recovery was
given the position of orderly. He
learned that the money taken from
the clothes of several patients from
the railroad construction camps above

driver and decamped with the box
