Cracken was arrested this morning
on a warrant sworn out by C. D. Put
nam charging him with stealing a bar
rel of whiskey from the store room
where it had been since the cloud
burst. The barrel had been placed in
the empty building while the cellar
was being cleaned out after the flood
and a woman living near saw three
men take the barrel away but did not
know them. This morning, however,
she recognized McCracken, who had
just come In town from his home cn
South Fork. Constable Terwilllger ar
rested him and he was taken before
Judge Miller, where he gave bonds
and was released. Mr. Putman went
to Pendleton today, where he will ap
pear as a witness before the grand
Jury, now In session, when the case
will be continued. ..
Judge Fits Gerald of the county
seat Is a Milton visitor today.
Mrs. L. A. Edwards of Portland, is
the guest of friends and relatives in
Milton and Freewater.
Miss Whitney, a 'public school
teacher. Is In the Walla Walla hos
pital afflicted with appendicitis.
Mrs. F. B. Wilcox has returned from
a three months' visit In the east.
City Electrician Coyle and assistant
are busy Installing the electric fire
alarm bells In the residences of the
Milton fireboys.
Councilman W. H. Bailey Is spend
ing the week In Spokane.
J. H. Coffman and wife have re
turned from a visit to Salem.
Dr. C. W. Thomas has received two
fine kettle drums which will be play
ed by his daughter, Ro'wena. in Prof.
Bacon's orchestra. He ordered, them
from the east.
Haulers are. busy bringing wheat
to the city and have the platform on
the new warehouse almost covered.
Victor Chastain of Lewiston, Is a

government forces loaded on a car the
huge 30,000 gallon storage tank, used
by them while building the Cold
Springs reservoir for the purpose of
storing carload iots of oil. It will be
shipped to the Klamath project,
where It will be used for the samp
purpose.
This afternoon Ed Hltt, the famous
hitter of the Hermlston club, left for
an extended visit to his old home In
Wisconsin. Ralph Phay will occupy
his place in the store of his brother,
H. E. Hltt, where he has been em
ployed since he came to Hermlston
nearly a year ago.
P. Toung, brother of O. R. & N.
agent H. J. Toung. left for his old
home yesterday where he will enter
school during the coming term. Mr.
Young has been in the Pioneer Phar
macy for some time. Mr. Paradise
will take the position vacated by him.
The Hermlston Boosters' club has
ordered S00 yards of ribbon to be used
in making suitable badges for Her
mlston day at the Bound-up.
Tonight the first meeting of the
Hermlston Library club will be held

Philadelphia. Floating sluggishly
at the mercy of the waves for three
years a pint bottle containing the ad
dress of William H. Windolph, this
city, traveled across the Atlantic
ocean, and was finally picked up off
the eastern coast of the Azores, about
five weeks ago.
Tha wayward travels of the little
bottle are most mysterious. It cross
ed the Atlantic, or at least reached the
other shore: whether Its course was
straight eastward, or whether currents
or winds took it miles In detour be
fore It reached Its destination, Is a
subject for conjecture.
On January 27, 1907, Mr. Win
dolph. on his way to Tampa and Key
West, passed down the coast of the
Carolines in a Merchants and Miners'
steamship, the Merrimac. Off North
Carolina, In an Idle moment, he put
his card In a whisky bottle and, push
ing the cork against the rail of the
vessel, tossed it overboard. Until it
disappeared from sight in the green
waves Mr. Windolph watched the tiny
adventurer, never thinking to hear
from It again.
Three and one-half years after the
card had been sent out on the sea, a
strange letter came to him from the
fishing firm of Manuel Vasconcelles
& Company, Spain. Within the en
velope was the same card which he
had sent out, unstained by the water,
uninjured after Its long voyage.
With the card was a letter stating
that It had been picked up In a whisky
bottle off the eastern coast of the
Azores, in the province of Praja, by
one of the crew of the fishing smack
D. Carlos, LeLonza, captain. The let
ter was in excellent English, but from
the style had evidently been written
by an educated Spaniard. It did not
state the exact date of the finding of
the bottle.

In his field near Karnes City, Just
south of this city, Frank Woods dug
up 25 Spanish dollars of dates rang
ing from 1810 to 1820. The old cart
road from San Antonio to the tea
coast runs within a short distance of
this field, and It is probable that some
of the early Mexican freighters flee
ing from robbers, burled .their money.
