JULY STOCK MARKET
HELD FAIRLY STRONG
D. O. LIVELY SAYS
RECEIPTS WERE LIBERAL
414 Cars of Stock Received at Poru
land Yards During Muiuli or July
Cattle Market Clotted As Strong
As It Opened Good Business in
Milk Cows.
July Is usually a dull month In live
stock markets but, according to D.
O. Lively, receipts at the Portland
Union stock yards were fairly liberal.
The total number of cars were 414,
in which were 6859 cattle, 6938 hogs,
15,143 sheep and 331 horses and
mules. As compared with last year
there was a decrease of 785 cattle,
an Increase of 6504 hogs, an Increase
of 1336 sheep and an Increase of 80
horses and mules.
Items of Interest in connection with
the market include the building up
of quite a business in the purchase
and sale of milk cows. Dairymen are
looking to the Portland Union stock
yards as a market place for the rea
son that all cows offered for sale here
are tested by a government inspector
free of charge.
James J. Hill of the Hill lines and
Robert S. Lovett of the .Harrlman
lines, will be vice presidents of the
fat stock show to be given at the
yards, next March. A number of dis
tinguished stock men tn the Pacific
northwest and throughout the United
States will act as officers of this show.
The proper grading of cattle on this
market and the paying of what the
difference between good and 'thin
quality represents to me shipper, has
caused the cattle men of the country
to turn their attention toward grain
feeding and ths fall and winter will
probably see more grain fed cattle in
Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Cal
ifornia, than In any previous year.
Good grain fed cattle are worth from
1 to 1 1-2 cents more per pound than
nay fed cattle. At the dlffrerence it
wll! pay the feeders to use grain.
A good barley crop, plenty of oats,
an abundance of alfalfa and a high
market make swine raising popular
and that most profitable of all crops
Is receiving much attention In the
Pacific northwest. It Is doubtful if
supply ever catches up with demand,
and preparing hogs for the Portland
market is the surest and safest busi
ness open to the farmer.
Disagreeable at Home.
Lots of men and women who are
agreeable with others, get "cranky"
at home. Its not disposition, Its the
liver. If you find In yourself that
you feel cross around the house, lit
tle things worry you, Just buy a bot
tle of Ballarr's Herblne and put your
liver In shape. You and everybody
around you will feel better for It.

ERROR IX ENROLLING
CAUSES COMPLICATION
Salem, Or. An error In enrolling
house joint resolution No. 15 so as to
make It appear to be an amendment
of article IX of the constitution and
repealing every provision contained
therein for the raising of stato reve
nues Instead of adding article XIX
as the original resolution, plainly
shows the provision that the state
may build and operate Its own rail
roads. Is not a ground to cause any
undue alarm for the supreme court
would probably hold that there was
no Intention on the part of the leg
islature to repeal every provision in
the constitution for levying taxes In
order to provide for state aided rail
roads. Both provisions would stand.
This view also dispels the appre
hension that the proposed railroad
amendment conflicts with another
amendment proposed by the legislat
ure and adoption of which Is urged
by the tax commission providing for
classification of taxable property for
assessment purposes. As the rail
road amendment was Intended jo add
article XIX Instead of being an
amendment of article IX there Is no
conflict.
The original and enrolled resolu
tion plainly sets forth that "an
amendment Is proposed to the constl-

enrolled resolution entitles It article
IX by mistake. Had the legislature
Intended to amend article IX, the res

railroad amendment was Intended

$200,000,000 NORTHWEST TRADE
IF CITIES WILL COMBINE
Seattle, Wash. "If Seattle, Port
land, Tacoma, Vancouver and Victoria
will stick together and work together
for their common good, a trade worth
$200,000,000 a year will come to the
Pnclflc Northwest from South Amer
lea. This Is no exaggeration. I have
documentary evidence to prove It. I
also have documentary evidence to
support the statement that Europe.
through International steamship lines,
is In a conspiracy to cut the United
States, nnd even the Dominion of Can
ada, out of trade that, from the geo
graphical locations of the two na
tions, should come to them." ,
This statement was Thursday made
by I. E. Moses, vice-president of the
Seattle Commercial club, and one of
the wealthiest men of this city. Mr.
Moses spent the last nine months In
South America nnd In Europe, and
made a thorough study of conditions.
"South America wants to trade
with the Pacific Northwest," he said.
"The steamship trust regulating rates,
however, forbid It. It fcjrblds equit
able rates anywhere but out of the
port of New York, and out of that
port the rates are all In favor of other
competing nations. I am not an alarm
ist.
"I am conservative In the highest
degree, but I want to say that, If the
Fnelflc Northwest has any sense what
ever. It will get together, send a rep
resentative to South America to study
conditions and, Irrespective of locality,
systematically work for a Northwest
commerce with South America. It I
not a Seattle proposition. It is n
Northwest proposition, and Northwest
cities should all combine nnd work In
harmony for the common good of this
section. The result will be astonish.
Ing, and I'm going to ask rtio Seattle
Commercial club to take up the mat
ter with the commercial clubs and the
chambers of commerce of Portland,
Vancouver, Tacoma and others of our
cities. And there is not one cent In
It for me outside of the profits that
will com to me through Increased
valuations of tny realty holdings In
Seattle If this city nnd the Pacific
northwest boom."
