Davis, chief engineer of the reclama
tion service, over the project. Includ
ing a trip to the dam and ending up
at Umatilla where he took the train.
He dhl not have the time he should
have liked to have had, consequently
the Inspection was rather hurried, but
altogether he was highly pleased with
the year's showing.
Wm. Duncomb, who has Been play
ing with the Stutiftcld baseball team
for the past month, has taken a po
sition In the Hermlston Mercantile
company.
H. G. Newport has returned from
Hot Lake sanitarium where he under
went an operation.
H. J. Longley has been deputized to
register Hermlston voters and now
lias books open ao that one may reg
ister. The matter of registering is
one that should not bo neglected by a
single citizen. It Is the dury of every
man to cast a vote for his choice of
the candidates.
On the evening of July 29th, the
ladles of the Methodist church will
give a social at the church. Ice
cream and cake will be served and a
program will be rendered.
J. R. Drown, foreman of the New
port Land and Construction company

The notice was Insterted by Buttle
himself. Yesterday his frienls, who
read it went around and said: "Poor
.Iiihn." Several persons who would
have sent flowers to show their re
spect for his memory, regretted his
request that they refrain from so do
ing. Buttle was dead as a mackerel to

No. 259 Madison street. This Is the
hme of W. II. Buttle, father of the
supposed dead man. There was no

Plan Didn't Work.
Mr. Buttle was found last nipht. He

husband, been away six months on a
visit to her sister, Mrs. George B.
Ross. In Glengnry, N. W. territory.
She has shown no Inclination to re
turn home, and Buttle believed If she
heard he was dead she would come
back. If he could fool her Into re
lurnlng under the belief that he was
dead, he felt sure he could induce
her to remain.
.Tust why Mrs. Buttle would return
t.' the dead husband when she would
not come back to a live one was not
explained. Mr. Buttle ndmltted that
his strategic plan of campaign has not
been a great success and he feared
the Canadian papers might not
"copy."

W. Van Winkles, the operator, has
gone on a month's leave of absence,
and will visit his parents who are at
present living In Vancouver, B. C.
L. Gatig made a business trip to
Pendleton the early part of the week.
Rev. Fr. Luke Sheehan said mass
here today and returned to Hermis
ton by train. .
Mrs. s. A. Saylor of Portland Is vis
iting here this week.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Switzler are at
present visiting In Bend, Ore.
The many friends of D. R. Brownell
will be pleased to see him about
again after his recent Illness.

J. W. Duncan was a visitor to Pat
terson and Irrigon on Saturday.

Mr. Eble Anthony and Miss Bessie
Cuching, both of The Dalles, Or.,
united in marriage in the Catholic
church at The Dalles by A. Bronsgeest,
V. G., on July 20. The bride was at
tended by her sister, Miss Esther
Cushing and the groom by Mr. Brook
house. After a wedding supper the
happy couple left on the Spokane
fiyer for their future home in this
place, where the groom is O. R. & N.
ticket agent.
A number of the young set had two
bathing parties during the past week.
Confessed a Bit Too Soon.
Chicago. Benjamin Blanco watch
ed the clock In Judge Barne's court
room for an hour and a half the other
day. Imagining every minute that
the jury was getting nearer and near
er a verdict in his trial on a charge
of stealing $1000 worth of clothing.
And then, just as the first Juror made
his appearance In the doorway, Blanco
leaped to his feet and told the judge
he was guilty. He was sentenced to
five months in Bridewell.
When Blanco had been led from
the courtroom the verdict was open
ed Just for curiosity, and it read.
"Not guilty."
But it was too late to help Blanco.
