Kilwaril V. Relative of Many Mon
arch. London. If the late King Edward
was the "Uncle of Europe," surely
King George Is entitled to be known
as the cousin of Europe.
The king is first cousin to the kais
er, the czar of Russia, the king of
Norway and the king of Spain. Am
ong the minor kingdoms he is first
cousin of the duke of Paxe-Coburg
and the duke of Hesse. Close cousin
ship also exists between King George
and the ruling sovereigns of Sweden,
Greece, Roumnnta. Hohenlohe-Lang-enburg,
and Saxe-Melnlngen.
The children of the duke of Con
naim'ht tarry the ties of cousinship to
Sweden, where Margaret, the duke's
eldest daughter, is now the wife of the
crown prince, which means that still
another of King George's first cous
ins will occupy a European throne.
The king's youngest uncle, the late
duke of Albany, left a son who suc
ceeded to dukedom of Saxe-Coburg-Gothu,
thus exhibiting still one more
first cousin who holds sovereign rank.
The king of Belgium Is third cousin
to our own king. So Is King Manuel
of Portugal and King Ferdinand of
Bulgaria. Of German cousins, from
the emperor downward, there is no
t n.l, for the whole of the kaiser's
children and grandchildren are King
George's second and third cousins, and
through the Emperor William's sis
ter he Is a cousin to the duke of
Sparta, who is crown prince of the
Helenes. Tiie king can also claim
cousinship with the Grand Duchess
Serge of Russia, all of whom were
daughter of his aunt, the late Prin
cess Alice.
Through his mother. Queen Alex
andra, King George Is cousin to in
numerable Danish royalties, and
through his Hanoverland ancestry he
is related to the duke of Cumberland,
the dowager grand duchess of Meck-
lenburg-Stetrlitz, and the crown prince
of Montenegro. But his relationship
must be as endless as varied when
one considers that the late Queen Vic
toria, his famous grandmother, left
no fewer than SS children, grand
children and great-grandchildren.

Rome. The situation in Spain and
the health of the pope are causing
serious concern in the Vatican. It is
feared that there is now little chance
fur an amicable adjustment of the
Spanish situation. Cardinal Mery del
Val has placed the church in a po
sition from which it can not recede
without serious loss of prestige and
! is feared the Spanish government
will be impelled to go much further
along the way of the separation of
church and state than it was at first
Intended.
The situation has weighed heavily
on the mind of the pope and has
caused a serious breakdown In his
physical condition. It Is understood in
fact that those close to the Holy
Father take a most serious view of
his condition and would not be sur
prised at any time if he should break
jlmvn entirely.

Why Many Merchants'
Advertising Doesn't Pay
ADVERTISING TALK NO. 8.
Books could be written about the power of persistency in adver
tising. It is a subject of which the advertising enthusiast never grows
v.eury.
The other day an advertising man was talking to a well-known'
Seattle wholesaler. Xaturally the conversation drifted to business
getting methods.
This reminded the wholesaler of some follow up letters he had
been receiving from an eastern manufacturer. He showed them to
the advertising man, saying "What do you think of them?"
The advertising man read them over and votichsafed the opinion
thnt they were pretty good.
"Pretty good! Well I guess they are!" replied the wholesaler. "If
ycu want to know just how good they are I will tell you."
"Those people have been sending me letters now for several
months. I didn't pay much attention to them at first, but finally I
became Interested In them. I certainly admire their persistency.
In fact I admired it so much that the other day I sat down and sent
them an order for 130,000 worth of goods."
Mighty strong argument on the persuasive force of stlcktoltlveness,
it n't it? A striking illustration for the man who expects to build a
business on a one-time advertisement. '
The merchunt who stays with the advertising day after day and
year after year is the one who wins the prize money. It isn't neces
sary that he write follow-up letters but it is essential that he. make
use of the columns of the dally newspaper.
The late Mark Twain's story of the spider is apropos at this point.
Twain was a newspaper man during several years of his life and was
a strong believer In advertising. While addressing an association of
advertisement writers one day, he said:
"It pays to advertise. When I was editing the Virginia City
Enterprise, writing copy one day and mining the next, I tried to force
this truth in many ways,
"A superstitious subscriber once wrote and said he had found a
spider on his paper; was this good luck or bad? I replied to him in
our answers-to-correspondents' column as follows:
'"Old Subscriber The finding of a spider in your copy of the
Enterprise was neither good luck nor bad. The spider was merely
looking over the pages to find out what merchant was not advertis
ing, so it could spin its web across the door and lead a free and un
disturbed existence forever after.' ".
It is wonderful when you stop to think of it, that you can talk to
every thinking man and woman in your city every day. Tou can do
this very thing. It la made possible through the daily newspaper, a
modern institution that for greatness ranks with the telephone, the
telegraph and the electric railway.
You can't expect a salesman to solicit business from more than a
few dozen people a day at best, and yet, through newspapers and maga
zines, you can solicit trade from millions of people in the same length
of time, if you choose.
Every Intelligent American will sooner or later make a study of ad
vertising, because every man who would succeed must know about
advertising. It is the most powerful force of modern business. It's
Held has only been prospected. It's possibilities are unlimited.
Kntlrely Cured of Rheumatism.
Foley Kidney Pills clear the blood
of uric acid, and by so doing elimi
nate rheumatism from the system. Mr.
John F. Cutton, Sterling, 111., writes
of her relief: "I have been afflicted
with rheumatism m my shoulder for
over a year and at times It would be
s osevere I could not attend to my
housework. Foley Kidney Pills were
recommended to me for my trouble
and after taking these for some time
I am entirely cured of rheumatism.
