Portland Union Stockyards, Stock- dale, May 20. The market for hogs Is showing a tinge of weakness that really means a loss of 10c in price. Sales of swine were made in the yards today from $10.46 to $10.65; one load going at the higher point and one at, the lower figure. Another load went at iio nat. - Small supplies were shown in the yards this morning but this was a very good feature. Some cattle were carried over from yesterday because of the lack of buyers. This consist ed of eastern Oregon stock , that did not come up to the standard. Again it should be stated here that there is but little call for unfinished cattle in the yards at this time be cause of the importation of grass fin ished stock from California. As long as the . trade can get quite good qual ity at reasonable values it Is not dis posed to take hold of poor stuff ex cept at a price that will satisfy neith er the shipper nor the commission handler, nor be an object for the buy er to take hold of any great quantity. California Stuff Moves First. This Is the time of the year when California stuff has the lead in the livestock market because the grass stock is In better condition than can beturned out by local people at so early a day In a short time ship ment will start from Interior Oregon and then the California demand will be over. Until then It is not advisable to ship too much cattle to market be cause there Is only Just about so much call and when this is satisfied, as It has been of late, It Is money out of the pockfets of the shippers to send more forward. Market for calves Is showing a slight decline from the high point but this can be expected at this period be' cause local values have been held up to a very high basis. Sheep market showing no change, being very dull with quotations prac tlcally as previously announced. No arrivals of sheep or lambs were shown In the yards today. Among Lho Shippers. J. W. Chandler had a load of hogs from Union, Ore., on today's market McKlnnon & Chandler shipped a mixed load of rattle and hogs for to lay's trade. Kldwell & Caswell were represent ed in today's yard transactions by a load of hogs from North Powder. W. H. Fields gent forward two loads of hogs from Idaho Falls, Idaho. O. M. Lister shipped three loads of cattle frflm The Dalles. Today's run of livestock compares with this day in recent years as fol lows: 1910 1909 1908 1907 1906 1905 Hogs. Cattle. Tho pupils of the Reppner high school presented the play, "Hiawatha," last Saturday night at Roberts hall, which. proved a great success, rne nan was iiuea to Us utmost capacity even to stand ing room. The splendid makeup of the Indians and lovely arrangement of the stage made the play very pictur esque, and was Indeed much differ ent than any performance ever at tempted before. , The smoothness wlth'which the play ran showed much care in the work of preparation on the part of their teacher. Miss Helzer. An additional surprise to the adlence was the selections by the newly or ganized orchestra, under the direction of . Koehnke, instructor in music in the Heppner school. For their first appearance the selections rendered were exceptionally good. The rest of the music for the evening consisted of instrumental solos and duets by Miss Virginia Crawford and Miss Mlnnalena Cameron. This is to be the only entertain ment of any kind given this year by the high school, for owing to the fact that the school board is at last to an nex the much needed twelfth grade to the high school there will be no grad uating exercises this year.
